Two Good ,One Bad ...

This thread is the continuation of my ongoing technical foul journey.

I had three last night, considered the first two good ones, the third one I screwed the pooch, I think..

Junior High opening night in a city league. These games were played in a teeny ,tiny gym. The smallest gym I have officiated in yet....There was no place to breathe on th court and the kids were too big for the court...So on to the technicals.

#1.....Coming down court after player made a basket. The player believed he was also fouled. He let me know this by his really demonstrative slapping off the hand and verbally letting me know "I got to give him his." Pretty loud, pretty demonstrative in a very small gym. Everyone heard him and saw him. I Tee him up. At halftime he comes up and says he's sorry.....SO I think this is a good T....

#2. Coach's team is getting blasted by about 30. His team is just not big enough. He's doing the usual complaining when I come by. I do the game management drill with him and he is just looking for a T. He gets louder and personal about it....I reward him with a T. I know it's a HTBT deal but pretty confident this was a good one also.

#3. This is why mechanics matter. I know the deal about getting away from the coach but I blew it. Coach from SItch #2 gets a T. I,the more senior Ref, then didn't do anything but stand there and get into a pi$$ing contest with him. :eek:He just wouldn't shut up and was getting louder and louder so I gave him his 2 T. And away he went. I don't think this was a good T. I should have been administering the free throws and been away from him but I didn't so I think I blew that one. Proper mechanics probably would have saved this one...

As Always comments, feedback and lashes with a wet noodle are always appreciated....

Proper mechanics may have prevented the last one. You have no way to know what he would have done after you went to administer the free throws. But you'd feel better about it, I'm sure. ;)

I agree with everything as you've described it, plus BITS's additional point above.

Out of curiosity, was this a 2-man or 3-man game?

2 man...3 man is only used around here in JUCO and Sectional and beyond championships.

Shouldn't you have been away from him, then, during the FTs. Or does your area change the mechanics to have the trail table-side during FTs?

Gotcha...when reading at first I was thinking 3-man where we have the option to go away after reporting the T and switching with the C for FT administration.

You just ignored the mechanic...and it bit you in the azz! ;)

No way. You'll have to go somewhere else for that...

I see the reason for second guessing yourself, but my question would be this- If you give coach the 1st T, what do you do if he's immediately up in your grill upon reporting? I know we are supposed to get away and administer, and your partner needs to come settle it down, but if the coach is not letting up and getting louder, chances are I'm not feeling too good about turning my back on the coach and ignoring him as he gets louder and louder...

Maybe the best thing to do is to do what we're taught, which is to get away as quickly as possible... unless coach says something unacceptable on the spot, then away he goes... (of course, I don't want to give the impression that I'm running away from him/her or scared of him/her either, so I might not be too quick to get lost if coach is exploding in front of me)
