Situation starting season-Dunk in warmups

Team upset with New coach because of things he has changed this year! Decided to get back at him.

During warmups of first game at 15 minute mark when officials come on floor, first player rips off a 360 and makes sure the officials sees him. First technical given. Next player, throws himself a lob and catches it and does a nice reverse dunk and hangs on the rim to make sure he is seen also. And of course it wouldn't be a charm if they didn't have the 3rd player stand at the free throw line and bounce it between his legs off the backboard and go get it and jam it through. The officials call all 3 Technicals Fouls, which would be 3 indirects on the coach correct???? EJECTION, $50 FINE IN KENTUCKY, AND 1 GAME SUSPENSION THE NEXT GAME. Of course the kids have long talk afterwards with coach about ironing out some of the problems, but that is another story!

Just wondering if this was the appropriate call?

Did this player get ejected with 2 T's? Dunking a dead ball and hanging on the rim.

That story / example has been around since Dr. Naismith first reinforced the peach basket.

The game penalty on the coach (3 indirects so he's out) is correct; the rest is up to the state association.

Bob is right. And it didn't happen in Kentucky.

Look at case play 10.3.3 Situation E. Only one T is issued.

This case play says the penalty for "DUNKING OR GRASPING", but if the player does both it would have to be 2 techs, I would have to agree with badnewsref on this one!

Honestly never heard of the story. Just brought this up because some of our players at our local high school were talking about doing it their first game.

It does not. I suggest you go back and re-read the case play.

Don't have my NFHS books with me at the moment. Wasn't there an Interp or Case Play in which a player dunks the ball and hangs on the rim following the horn to end a quarter and the resolution was to assess 2 T's?

look at 10.3.3 situation c

Each player is assessed a technical foul and the coach is assessed an indirect T for dunk. So, he has 3 indirects and is gone!

He knows that; he was responding to whether one player could have been given two Ts.

Personally, I like the idea of capping the pregame indirects at 2. Go ahead and give the dunk and hanger the 2nd T.

I doubt if he's playing that game anyway. :D

But there is no rules basis for any capping. So how would you justify this?

BTW, where was the coach in all this? (Yeah, I know, it's a theoretical situation) Why would he let three players do this without taking some action, hopefully after the first one, but definitely after the second.

There isn't any rules basis for it. Sorry I wasn't clear, but I'd be in favor of amending the rule to put a cap on pre-game indirect technicals. Although the frequency of this situation is such that it wouldn't really have any effect at all. But since we're already getting theoretorical.

As for the coach, not sure there's much he can do to physically prevent the players from doing this. They've already decided they don't want to play for him, so unless he can physically restrain them, I doubt he can stop it.

What if in the pre-game dunk, a player used his teammate's back to get the needed elevation.

Is that 3 T's?
