Changing Hats...

Well, I'm going to the dark side starting 11/9...First game of the season for my 3rd grade travel team that I'm coaching! :D

My daughter made the team and I volunteerd to head coach if she made it. So, we are 3 weeks into practice and the season starts in 2 weeks.

We'll be playing in the league that I typicaly officiate in (I do the boys and girls games for grades 3-8). I've been warning all my ref buddies that "I'm coming to a sideline near you!" :p

Will be a bit different for me since the guys I typically pair with to ref will now be MY officials....I told them I promise not to get any Ts!:D

I guess I'll have to stop reffing the girls league while my daughter plays ;)

Welcome aboard! I've been dual hatted for yrs! Good luck and let us know how it goes.....and "do tell" the interesting issues as they develop.

Remember that at 3rd grade level, even with a traveling team, you're going to get your share of relatively inexperienced officials, so this is your chance to exhibit the absolute top level of good sportsmanship. Be sure to shake their hands after the games and tell them they did a good job. It will mean a whole lot to them, especially if they're really young.

The word redundant comes to mind.

3rd grade travel team.

Someday, in the future, a woman will be expecting quintuplets, and the world will have it's first Womb Travel Team. I don't know what would be the appropriate age for selecting highly skilled players, and cutting others, to form a travel team, but I know that third grade is too early.

I'm mixed on it Billy....They are school based programs and trying to get the girls involved early. We had 15 show up for "evals"...I was not part of that process since I was a potential coach for the team....the eval process is about as unbiased as it gets for this level...

One girl did get cut but we also have a standard rec league for her to play in. The reason she was cut was said that it appeared she never picked up a basketball until the night of evals. She's playing rec though and encouraged to come out again next year. Her parents understood....

The travel program allows those that are a step above to play with other players who are a step above against other area school districts. I have a few girls who I would classify as "A" players for this age and really need to be playing with better players because they would run circles around some of the rec league kids.

My second-earliest basketball playing memory was from my 3rd-grade travel team. I remembered that we got to eat oranges at half-time.

And your earliest memory was of your coach whipping out a rulebook? :p

At least there are no dandelions to pick in basketball. The 3rd grade traveling baseball team's coach has that to deal with.

It's not easy to know what you're thinking about.
