Believe it or not, I just read who the next participants in Fox TV's Celebrity Boxing fiasco are going to be. It's (are you sitting down?) Manute "I once killed a lion with a spear" Bol vs. William "I never met an all you can eat buffet I didn't like" the Refrigerator Perry.

The only analogy I can think of is a giraffe vs. a hippo. Bol may have the reach advantage, but Perry must outweigh him by at least two tons (English measure, not metric).

BTW - I heard they were going to sign up MTD Sr., but they thought he would take so long analyzing the referee's pre-fight instructions that they would run out of time. ;)

MTD Sr. - please note the winky face.

Who's next? How about Joey Crawford vs. Rasheed Wallace?

Who's next? Joey Buttafuco was supposed fight John
Bobbit, but Bobbit pulled out (ahem) because he got
arrested for beating his wife (no, I'm not making this up).
Anyway, Chyna, or China, or whatever-the-hell she calls
herself is taking Bobbit's place. I guess they have a
contract with the American Plastic Surgeons Association.

In case you missed it, Frank Deford has a piece on Manute Bol for HBO's Real Sports this month. Bol has given everything he's earned from his NBA playing days to the Sudan people who are fighting against the Islamic government that took over several years ago. He has supported them with food, supplies, and clothing since early in his NBA career.

A couple of years ago he traveled back to the Sudan because the government had promised him a position that would, supposedly, allow him to help his people. However, the whole thing was a hoax and he was held against will and not allowed to return to the United States. Being 7'7" certainly has it's draw backs and made it difficult for him to escape. After 9/11, it was almost impossible for him to get out. But he managed to flee to Egypt in January and, after another month, was able to return to the United States.

Although he lives in a very poor home that he rents and is virtually broke, he plans to give all of the money that he gets from Celebrity Boxing to aid the Sudanese people who are fighting the Islamic regime.

Sometimes, there's more to a story than there first appears to be.

No sh1t, that's incredible. Got a link?

BktBallRef Wed May 15, 2002 09:47pm

Here's a link to the Real Sports page. There's just a brief summary of what's in the story.

http://www.hbo.com/realsports/stories.shtml

Actually, the entire show was very good. I'm not a Bryant Gumbel fan, who is? But the piece on Phil Mickelson was very goo, the 3 pole vaulters who have died this year was excellent and so was a story on an amputee who runs track for the Univ. of Miami. Should be on again this week if you get HBO.

BTW, I don't care for Mary Carillo either! :)

Bob Ley spoke to Bol on Outside the Lines this weekend. He is donating the whole 30 grand to his cause.

The other bout is Buttafuco (sp?) vs a female pro wrestler.

I would pay to see Mike Tyson vs. Martha Stewart.

Or....how about Charles Barkley and Hulk Hogan vs. MaryKate and Ashley Olson in a tag-team match.

Or....how about Jerry Springer vs. Oprah? :p

Nah. It wouldn't even be a match. He'd destroy her. What defense could she put up? I suppose she could try to bore him to death by talking about which wine goes best with Lennox Lewis' children.

Nah, as much as I love Chuck and the Hulkster (and I watched my share of the Hulkster's matches on Saturday mornings in college), my 7-year-old daughter would never speak to me if I rooted against Mary-Kate and Ashley.

This one I think would actually be entertaining. I vote for the last one. Springer would have pregnant teenage stripping nazis who have a secret for their boyfriends in his corner; and Oprah would have the members of her book club, plus the "Men are from Mars" guy in her corner. This has to happen. I'm not asking, I'm demanding it!!

Hey, I would pay to see Mike Tyson vs Judge Judy!

He certainly would get an earful from her. ;)

Frankly, I think Judy would destroy him. She's one tough cookie. Besides, she would have Bert as a backup.

BTW - The whole idea of Tyson vs. Stewart is to have him destroy her. Of course, she would come out with designer knitted gloves. :p

the rest of the card

Here's something else I stumbled across...

John Wayne Bobbitt was supposed to go head to head (pun intended) with adulterer Joey Buttafuoco, but unfortunately the loser with the weird penis gave his current wife a severe beating and got arrested.

Nevertheless, the show is still set to go on May 22, 2002, with former NFL'er William "The Refrigerator" Perry getting in the ring with former NBA star, Manute Bol. Olympic gold medalist Olga Korbut will face off with scrappy Multi-Millionaire bride Darva Conger. And finally Welcome Back, Kotter actor Ron Palillo (Horshack) will fight against Saved By The Bell's very own Screech -- Dustin Diamond.

But wait, Joey Buttafuoco is still set to fight, not against the wife beater, but rather a woman who used to be more commonly known as Chyna in the WWE circuit. That's right, the former adulterer is going to get a beating from Joanie Laurer.

Will wonders ever cease? Everyone talks about how terrible this show is and wonder in disgust how anyone could watch it, but hey, 12 million people can't be wrong...

Sure they can. Haven't we gotten about 12 million posts that say, "My friend says you can catch your own airball, but I say it's a travel. . ."? :D

AND THE RESULTS ARE........

Joey B beats Chyna
Screech takes out Horshak
Darla overwhelms Olga
and the Frig beats up on the human toothpick.

This will save your brain from the 2 hours of broadcast, since the bouts were held on Wednesday night.
