I feel like this is a ridiculous question...
This is my second year officiating. I went to camps this summer and got noticed and my assignor has given me a full scholastic schedule. (Which has a lot to due with reading this forum, so thank you everyone!). Anyway, my uniform last year was just a regular referee shirt, with the $5 IAABO patch. This season, I need more uniforms, as I am working multiple days a week. My question is about the American flag. I want to get them on my jersey. They come in white and gold borders. Everyone I have seen has the gold border one, but the white one just seems to go better. Should I get gold like everyone else, get white, or does it really not matter at all. I'm assuming its the ladder, but thought it was worth a question. Thanks!

Check your local association. They usually have a standard in which border you need to have on the flag. My association, for example, requires everyone to have the flag with a gold border.

I would say it all depends on what your association's guidelines are. If everyone else is wearing the gold border, then get the gold border.

I assume this means you aspire to reach new heights. |
Hint: There's a reason they call it a "uniform". You do want to wear what your partners are wearing.

You Must Have A Lot Of Veterans On Your Local Board ...

Also, I guess that the fact that a patch is worn matters: United States Flag Code 176(j): No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. Disclosure: I did not have the privilege of serving my country, but my late father served as a United States Army Staff Sergeant during World War II, served two years overseas in Africa and Italy, participated in the Battle of Rome Arno, and I proudly display the flag that draped his coffin in my home. I proudly display my flag on all national holidays, and whenever a Connecticut soldier, sailor, Marine, or airman, is killed in Iraq, or Afghanistan, 43 times in the past five and a half years. I also proudly wear a flag patch on my lab coat at work, I'm a chemist, and I display a flag on my desktop on both my lab, and my home computer, and will continue to do so until the patriotic, dedicated, men, and women, of our armed forces are safely home. Just because I cited the United States Flag Code does not mean that I'm against flag patchs. |
Yellow border = active military

Also, while I understand the gold border is "supposed" to be worn by veterans only, I realize that's not how it's done in a lot of places. It's not like there's any enforcement mechanism for the flag code. Find out from someone high up in your association what the guideline is. |

:D How many Sharpie's do you use to color in the yellow? |
This is the very reason I have not worn a flag for basketball. This is way too much work to fit everyone's standards. In football at least the crew can decide what we are going to wear and we move on. I do not have to adhere to 20 different standards.

I've made the recommendation we don't wear flags. Aside from Rut's issues, I can't find any consistency on where guy's put the flags on their shirts. Some do 2 inches from the top, others 2 inches from the bottom, others wrong arm...
Lapel flag pins look nice. Flags on black and white striped shirts don't. |

Again, since there's (rightly) no enforcement in place for the code, it's left up to individuals to follow on their own. |
