Five (6th guy never showed) of us worked for the annual <u>Alcohol Free Weekend</u> where Americorp puts on a fun time for (<i>guessing here</i>) 5th grade to 10th grade kids at Michigan Tech's Athletic complex.
There's bands, wall climbing, who-knows-what, and a three-on-three tourney of about 5-6 levels.
We reffed with Macker rules as a base and then threw in our own regular rules when we thought it was necessary.
No coaches, just players with pretty darn good attitudes.
Having had no Macker experience, the players had to fill me in on some of the unwritten rules and after the first game everything went pretty smoothly.
The scorekeepers and food staff seemed to be teachers, educators and the like as well as, of course, many Americorp volunteers.

I got to practice a lot on the advantage/disadvantage calls on shooters because the kids in 3-on-3 tournaments are used to shooting, getting fouled, and not getting a call.
Since one of the rules was "if a shot goes in and the shooter is fouled, then count the basket and give ball to the other team", the slow whistle came in real handy when a kid went up and the ball bounced around and took some time to roll in, or not.

3 on 3 in San Diego

Gus Macker was started by Mitch McNeal in his
backyard in Michigan. The world tour 30 cities was
hot in the mid-1980s. It was followed by Hoop It Up
and a few others. They used to draw several thousand teams in Dallas. San Diego was a small market for them.
Neither comes to San Diego anymore.
We still have a once a year event sponsored
by the Holiday Bowl and need refs for this
year's event (May 18 & 19)at Crown Point Shores
in Pacific Beach.
