A little OT - when it still was the NBA
Our local Comcast Sports Net channel is showing all six games from the 1977 NBA finals between the Trailblazers and the Sixers. I'm really enjoying seeing Walton, Lucas, Hollins, etc. vs. Erving, Collins, McGinnis, et. al. It is a little weird watching a two man crew and no 3 point line for an NBA game. Game 4 was shown a few hours ago and the two officials were Manny Sokol (who teed up Sixer coach Gene Shue with just two fingers) and Ed Murphy. Both of them were really exaggerated in the motions on their calls compared to today and Manny actually called a three second violation.
The most noticeable difference is in how much emphasis was put on team play. The passing by both teams was almost artistic. It was great basketball. Oh yeah, I really enjoyed seeing the mod hairstyles and leisure suits. BTW - the color commentator was Rick Barry. He had incredible insight into the game and came across terrific. It almost makes up for having to listen to the play-by-play by Bent Hamburger, er, I mean Brent Musburger, whose middle name happens to be Woody (really!).

I almost felt sorry for Musberger when he was let go. I would have had he not coined that annoying "The road to..." phrase.

I enjoy the replay games as well. The players were probably not as athletically gifted, but they understood the game at a deeper level and certainly played with a more team oriented approach. Now I have to ask, were the mod hairstyles and leisure suits on the television on in your mirror and closet? |
