Technical foul?

Doing a freshman tournament over the weekend a player in frustration after a missed basket turned and swung his arm. Unfortunately he struck the player behind him in the face. What is your call.

I have an offensive foul as the player makes contact if he doesn't make contact I have a violation or technical foul.

Have to see it, but one of three things: personal foul, intentional foul, or flagrant foul.

From your description characterizing it as accidental, probably a personal foul.

Couldn't be a technical foul (unless the ball was dead - doesn't sound like it was).

Probably not offensive, as it's after a shot(unless an offensive rebound was involved, which I doubt from the OP).

Regardless, I'd go with a run-of-the-mill personal foul on this one most likely.

If it was a solid hit, you can go with an intentional foul as it could constitute "excessive" contact. It's an option.

Language from the rule book definitions in R4-19:

-ART. 1 A personal foul is a player foul which involves illegal contact with an opponent while the ball is live.
- ART. 5 A technical foul is:
(b) a noncontact foul by a player.
(c) an intentional or flagrant contact foul while the ball is dead, except a foul by an airborne player.
-ART. 4 A flagrant foul may be a personal or technical foul of a violent or savage nature. If personal, it involves, but is not limited to violent contact such as striking, kicking or kneeing. If technical, it involves dead-ball contact...

If you think he was just frustrated, it's probably best to call it intentional. If you think he was mad at the other player (perhaps for causing him to miss the shot), then a flagrant would be best. Remember, the penalty for a flagrant also includes ejection.

From your post, I agree that an intentional is warranted.

I apologize I missed the fact that it was a loose ball off of a missed shot. You're right. Having not seen the play I'm just going with a regular foul but def a foul regardless of severity of contact. Hits to the head cannot be ignored.

How's my sentence structure? Please go here to file a comlaint.

Snaqwells, it's not your sentence structure, it's your spelling.

Damn, M&M Guy beat me to it. Of course, his spelling isn't that good, since sometimes he comes out of the pack as W&W Guy.

Quite possibly the most ironically funny (due to the fact that it was completely inadvertent) thing I've ever written.
I think I'll leave it alone for a while; as much as I love changing my sig.

Yup, and per request from coaches everywhere, we'll call it both ways. It might be hard to find the 2nd one, but we'll find it.

At some point, I'm going to have to tell you to STFU.

Someone should tell Padgett to take his meds. I'd do it, but he scares me.

I changed my mind and fixed the error. My credibility is at stake.

Not that I'd recommend it, but I suppose people could call 911 to complain about my grammar and/or sentence structure.

Since the contact happened after a missed field goal attempt, I am going to make the educated assumption that the ball was still live. Therefore if illegal contact occured, the foul will be a personal foul. This is a play that one has to see to make a definite decision but at the very least it will be a common foul or an intentional foul at the worst. I cannot see this being a flagrant foul unless he knocked out his opponent; this is the portion of the play I would have to see.
