Mark Padgett Sat Apr 13, 2002 06:22pm

I can't believe it. I did my first games in about a month today. There were four games, all HS boys rec, and - I didn't issue even one technical !!!!

When I mentioned this to my partner after the fourth game, he said, "OK, who are you and what have you done with Mark?"

I must be getting mellow in my old age. Either that, or deaf.

Oh well, I have three more tomorrow. I guess I'll just have to make up for lost time. ;)

Mark Dexter Sat Apr 13, 2002 06:33pm

Wow, Mark - I'm disappointed in you. No technicals whatsoever in a four-game rec league set?

I was somewhat shocked today, too - I worked a fraternity flag football tournament today, and didn't have to give out any UC penalties. Of course, I think that is because the tournament was sponsored by one of the sororities on campus, and the guys didn't want to be seen as bigger jerks than they really are!

Bart Tyson Sat Apr 13, 2002 08:56pm

I'm predicting 4 count them 1,2,3,4 T's will be issued by Mark tomorrow.

JRutledge Sat Apr 13, 2002 10:13pm

Impossible!!!!!

 You have to be lying. Rec. games inheriently have Ts written all over them. You cannot do rec. games without a T. You must have been doing a after season HS or College game. This cannot be real. :)

Peace

BktBallRef Sat Apr 13, 2002 11:06pm

I thought we were supposed to always try to find a way not to call a T? Jennifer shouldn't call them but Mark should?

Make up your mind, Jeff. :p

Mark Padgett Sun Apr 14, 2002 12:20am

Two points - first, I said this was HS rec. Most of the boys are going to play varsity next season and many of them played varsity last season, but in general, they were well behaved. I think it's because a lot of coaches are watching and they want to make a good impression in order to increase their chances of making varsity next year.

Second - who's Jennifer? I have a daughter Jennifer but she doesn't ref.

We'll see if I issue any tomorrow. I spent the past week practicing my T mechanic in front of a mirror and I'd hate to have all that effort go to waste. ;)

JRutledge Sun Apr 14, 2002 12:48am

Tah Dah!!!

Jurassic Ref has a story

Jurassic Ref has a Rec. League story that knocked my socks off.
Maybe he'll share.

Hey, you beat me to it! ;)

Don't let me steal your thunder, partner! Have at it!! :D

Mark P., Jennifer is a new Rec Ref, on the McGriff board, that Rut chastised for calling 7 T's in 5 days. That's based on his extensive experience working rec ball. :(

Chastise Tony??

 What the hell are you talking about? I think Jennifer did not in anyway feel chastised by anything I said. As a matter of fact she saw it EXACTLY MY WAY!!! She totally agreed with what I said and then adjusted accordingly.

You have no damn idea what I do. But I forgot, you have officiated games with me, so you know everything I have done. ;)

This comes from a man that would give a T, no matter what a player said to themselves. Should I expect any different?

Peace

My record is intact !!!

Well gang, I knew I couldn't go a whole weekend without issuing at least one T. And - I didn't :)

Second game today out of three, and we've got JV girls (oh boy!). Coach A is howling much of the time but I've got my earplugs in. Finally, one of his girls drives the hoop and B1 gets a clean block and knocks the ball about 20 feet OOB. The monkey goes bananas and starts screaming at my partner, who was lead.

My partner gives him the stop sign and says, "That's enough, Coach." The guy shuts up and my partner turns away. Then something happened so bizarre I almost didn't believe my own eyes. As soon as my partner turned away, the howler monkey held up a front paw and flipped him off!!!

My partner had his head turned and didn't see it, but I certainly did. WHACK! A flagrant T with an ejection.

It was yummy.

Can't wait 'till next weekend.

Mark Dexter Sun Apr 14, 2002 07:10pm

Phew!

The Padgett that we all know and love is back!

Man, am I jealous! :)

See Rut, this is the type of thing I'm talking about. Mark had no choice. The coach had already made the choice. You can't ALWAYS look for a way to avoid the T.

But,... but, Mark was wearing his earplugs trying to avoid the inevitable. He did try to ingnore, but he couldn't ignore the trial.

Earplugs don't help when you see a howler monkey flying the bird! :)

But you're correct. It's one of those situations where you can't ignore (or ingore) the gesture or try something else. ;)

When I was a kid,my dad asked me if I wanted to be a referee when I grew up.I told him the answer was definitely "yes".He told me that I had to make a choice then-one or the other-because I couldn't do both.Ol' Dad was right.

Can't see good 'nuff to type.

I know you're referring to my son, Josh, who is a HS official. However, my two daughters, Mindy and Jennifer are quite content just raising their kids (yes, I am a grandpa). There will be at least one more basketball "nut" in the family, however. My oldest grandson, Tyler, is seven and very tall. His dad, my son-in-law David, is 6'6" and has played hoops since he was a kid, plus he reffed rec for a few years. Tyler started playing at his local Y last year and is incredibly good for his age. He loves football, basketball and baseball and wants to play all three.

Who knows, maybe Tyler will turn out to be the next ref in the family?
