My 1st HS game

I'm officiating my first high school basketball game with the assigner being my partner... any advice?

btw it's a girls varsity summer league game.

Kind of short notice. Not a lot of time to brush up on rules or mechanics, so my advice would be to blow the whistle. Try not to worry about where you're supposed to be standing, or you'll forget to officiate. Call the game, as best you can.

Take all the advice you can get from the assignor. Good luck.

Relax and don't get in a big rush, just let the clock run (if it's a running clock). Don't anticipate the call, just get the foul when it happens -- once you've hit the whistle, make sure you do these things before you start moving: get the player's # and team color correct, PLUS make eye contact with your partner and communicate to him which team gets the ball and how it will be put into play.

Listen to any and all advise/suggestions your P might have for you. Oh, and have fun! :)

Blow the whistle. Slow down. Repeat as necessary for 32 minutes.

Buy him many brownpops after the game. And also mention what a great official he is while doing so.

Seriously, just ask him how he thought you did. And then listen.

Good luck and many more games in your future.

Summer League Hmmmm......
Ask partner. They might not want to switch on fouls. You could fall into using sloppy mechanics. Sloppy mechanics does not mean sloppy game. Call the game like a real game.
Have fun!

Let us know how you did. I remember my first game like it was yesterday. My very first game as an official other than some YMCA 3rd grade games was a JV Boys game between two 5A schools. It was JV at the highest level and I was scared to death!

I remember my first foul call, and my co-official gave me the thumbs up. I still at that time wondered how I would ever last the entire four quarters! There was a play where a kid fell down with the ball and I froze and did not blow the whistle! Other than that, I survived. It continued to get better and better. Now, just about every game I do is fun and that is what is important.

Have fun!

OK so my first high school game was a success my assigner was really impressed with the skills i had and gave me lots of praise. I tried my best to stay in position and blow my side. Although i do rememebr asking him for help once i didnt feel i did a bad job calling that game. Other than that it was great. He already hooked me up with 17 games in the next month. (i must have done something right :)

thanks for the advice guys it really helped

Interestingly, in CaRef's other thread asking about people's experience, one of the "related threads" at the bottom is this one, which is the exact same question (age, experience, level), posed by a different poster: http://forum.officiating.com/showthread.php?t=3593

In that thread, Matt S. gives this reply, fwiw:

Quote:

1. 20
2. 5th year
3. varsity

To you young guys (-25) that are doing college, where do you live, and how have you climbed the ladder so quickly. In southern California, it takes a lot of time to start doing college ball.

2 years? D1? JC, maybe.... all it takes is hardwork and anything is possible.

Keep hating old folks... it just adds more fuel to the fire ;)

Yabut, that was 6 years ago. Things have changed. :)
