NCAA Delay of Game

I find the verbiage in the NCAA rule book to be confusing. I am wondering if some of you may share the proper interpretation.

According to NCAA men's, there are six possible infractions that are classified as delay according to 4.17. (Only 3 of which are penalized with a warning)

The penalty for which is according to 4.17.2

One individual warning shall be given to the team that fails to
comply with Rule 4-17.1.d through g, and the warning shall be reported to
the official scorer. Thereafter, a technical foul shall be assessed.

According to Appendix V: "One warning for each delay of
game situation." Is listed on the major rule differences between NFHS & NCAA.

So my interpretation is that there are 3 different "warnable" offenses and in NCAA a team would be able to receive 3 different delay warnings for seperate offenses before receiving a technical foul. Whereas in NFHS, you get one delay warning for any of the 4 infractions and the second infraction is a T regardless of the type of infraction. Is this correct? I would hope that the Rules commitee will look at incorporating the information in Appendix V into the description in Rule 4.17. It doesn't seem clear to me on its own.

I don't have the books handy to check on the "3 vs. 6 delays" issue, but the NFHS recently changed so that a team gets only one warning to apply to all delays. The NCAA did NOT make a similar change. So, the rules are now different.

There are 4 delay of game situations. Report each delay to the the score book. If there are subsequent delays, the offending player is charged a direct T which counts toward the players personal foul count to disqualification. BTW, the four delay of game situations are the same as the NFHS.

Thanks guys!

You are correct, there are 4. The d-g conversion to numbers was too hard for my pea-sized brain. :>

According to the rule book, the second infraction after a warning is an administrative technical or indirect technical (depending on the type of delay), not a direct technical.

Adminstrative technical for delay

"Art. 5. A team shall not delay the game, when the game clock is not running
by:
a. Consuming a full minute by not being ready when it is time to start
either half or any extra period.
b. After a team warning has been issued, delaying the game by
preventing the ball from being promptly put in play, such as delaying the administration of a throw-in or free throw by engaging in a team
huddle any place on the playing court.
c. After a team warning has been issued, failure to have the court ready
for play after the final horn to end any timeout"

(Men) The administrative technical fouls in this section
do not apply toward the team-foul total nor toward
disqualification or ejection

Indirect Techncial foul for delay

Art. 11. After a team warning has been issued, attempting to gain an advantage
by interfering with the ball after a goal or by failing to immediately pass the
ball to the nearest official after the whistle has blown

(Arts. 2 thru 12) INDIRECT TECHNICAL FOUL. Two free
throws awarded to the offended team. The ball shall be put
back in play at the point of interruption. Do not count an
individual’s five personal fouls toward disqualification nor
toward the team-foul total, but DO count toward ejection.
The offended player shall be awarded two free throws and
play shall resume at the point of interruption.

Sorry about that, I was refering to the boundary plane delay of game violation for women's and made an all inclusive statement.
