Angry If this were a basketball game?

From the Baseball forum.

What would you do if a player intentionally ducked out the way of a bullet pass so that the ball would hit you?

If I knew for sure that the kid moved so I'd get hit, it's a flagrant T. Not sure how I could be sure, though.

Probably easier to tell if the kid who threw it did it on purpose. Flagrant T for that, too, if I knew that it was intentional.

I liked the responses on the beisbol forum that they dump the manager too. It seems that the culture is that the manager is responsible for the players' actions. In basketball, as Scrapper1 says, we dump the two players, but I'm not sure that I would dump the HC as well.

Exclamation

My response against the coach would be based on the object thrown. If he had a glass thrown at me, I would throw the ball back at his glasses. If he had a shoe thrown at me, I would throw the ball back at his shoes. If he had a ball thrown at me, I would throw the ball back at his, well, you get the idea.

It would be so obvious in basketball since the officials are not camped out behind a certain player (ie the catcher with an umpire). I think it would be quite an amazing series of events for a ref to be purposely hit by a basketball. As a baseball umpire who has been hit by a pitches and hit balls, I wouldn't be too concerned about a basketball hitting me. However, I've never experienced what is being alleged in this baseball instance. Although, a foul tip directly to the chest will take you out of a game as I have experienced. JMO

Catch the pass, and dunk it! Shout my own name, pop my stripes.

At the first opportunity, award the player that ducked FT's, put some backspin on the ball causing the player to violate while reaching for the ball.

Of course throwing something at any basketball official would be grounds for ejection. I find it hard to believe that this would be as successful in the basketball arena because a baseball umpire behind the plate is in a fixed position. A basketball official is constantly moving around and there are not many situations I can think of where I would be directly behind a basketball player for him or her to miss a ball and I would get hit.

Peace

Just to add to what Rut said, a basketball is much softer than a baseball, and no player on the court is going to be able to throw it 70 mph.

And in baseball you do have padding. I have been hit a lot harder in baseball and I barely felt it. So even if you get hit by a baseball it is likely there is some padding.

While a basketball can't be thrown at 70 mi/hr, if one isn't looking and were to get hit in the head by a basketball ball thrown baseball style from close range could cause serious neck damage, definitely whiplash.

Tell that to my left forearm, Marty Foster who had his bell rung in a Mets/Cubs game last year, my buddy's left thigh which was black and blue for 3 weeks (at least he tells me) and my cajones even when the ball hit the protection last year Shoulda been using this... http://www.nuttybuddy.com/#

Give me a basketball any day. At least I'm allowed to react to it and try to catch it or duck out of the way.

Wow that would hurt. Getting hit by a fast thrown ball. It actually would hurt even more if you were not watching the ball and can cause serious damage.

Verdict is in. School fined $1K and placed on "severe warning status" - they can't screw up in '09 or else.

Looks like the catcher is losing out on this, too. Apparently, he'd been invited as a "preferred walk-on" to a college team. That invitation has been withdrawn.
