Rule 4-41-3. NFHS

Rule 4-41-3. The try starts when the player begins the motion which habitually precedes the release of the ball.

On a drive to the basket, is the start of the try when the dribbler picks up the ball and takes the customary steps to the basket?

Are the step and a half, or the two steps the motion, which habitually precedes the release of the ball?

Happy Memorial Day!:)

Yes.

By rule(specifically rule 4-15-4), the dribble ends when the player gathers the ball. At that time, the player has to either pass or shoot while following the traveling restrictions laid out in rule 4-44. You determine whether it's a pass by applying rule 4-31, and you determine if it's a try by using 4-41-2.

You haveta know all of the rules cited above to call the play correctly.

Perhaps the ultimate gray area. "The motion which habitually precedes the release of the ball" is obviously not the same for every player. Use your best judgment. IMO, this is a case where it is important to be quick and decisive with the call.

The good thing about a gray area is that it is difficult for anyone to say that you are wrong.:)
