Rule 4-41-3. NFHS
Rule 4-41-3. The try starts when the player begins the motion which habitually precedes the release of the ball.
On a drive to the basket, is the start of the try when the dribbler picks up the ball and takes the customary steps to the basket? Are the step and a half, or the two steps the motion, which habitually precedes the release of the ball? Happy Memorial Day!:) |

By rule(specifically rule 4-15-4), the dribble ends when the player gathers the ball. At that time, the player has to either pass or shoot while following the traveling restrictions laid out in rule 4-44. You determine whether it's a pass by applying rule 4-31, and you determine if it's a try by using 4-41-2. You haveta know all of the rules cited above to call the play correctly. |
