Sports officiating must be fun. Michigan has more than ever.

That's awesome, mick. Too bad about the sports with lower numbers, though.

Interesting. Seems I read more articles to the contrary. Wonder if this is true across the country? I would bet not. Anyone know what the stats are where they are?

What would be really interesting would be to see the change in numbers from the beginning of the season to the end. I'd bet basketball has the highest percentage of loss.

Are you saying high school basketball can be most disheartening?

Sort of. Actually, I'm saying the amount of crap bestowed on newbies combined with the impossibility of preparing them for it, makes for a high percentage of them dropping out. Remember, in basketball, the clowns are seated only a few feet from where we are working and there are only two (or three) of us as targets so the vitriol is much more concentrated than in most other team sports.

I can say that it might be possible that the State of Michigan is doing a better job to recruit or support officials in their early stages. I know that in my state as it relates to basketball, we do not have a shortage of officials. I guess you could factor things in like pay, training, resources and anything else that helps officials to do our job better.
