Player forgets it's a 1 and 1

Had this situation Saturday. Late in the game, player shooting 1 and 1. I'm administering free throws. I step in and clearly indicate it is 1 and 1. Partner at the trail does the same. Player shoots the first free throw, misses and the rebound comes back to him. Nobody moves, every player forgot it was 1 and 1. Player throws the ball (now live) towards me. I step out of the way and let it go out of bounds. Blow whistle for violation and give ball to other team. I know I did the right thing. Here is my question: how would you have handled it if I had caught the ball? Go to possession arrow?

Nope, the FT shooter's team had team control when you blew your whistle(I'm assuming that you blew your whistle when you caught the ball. Team control on an IW = a throw-in to the team that had team control under rule 4-36-2(a).

Assuming you moved aside so that the ball hit the floor OOB, and not you.

With any luck, since it's a 1-and-1, you'll still be standing OOB. So when you catch it, the ball is OOB, and it is still a violation.

If you did catch it and standing IB, go back to last team in control due to IW.

Let's say the official catches the ball, but doesn't blow his whistle. What then?

By the way, JR, I'm assuming I handled the original situation correctly by letting the ball go out of bounds. Right?

Drop it. Back away from it. Raise your hands in an "I don't want it" guesture. Hope somebody figures it out :D

As soon as I recognize that not a soul is making a move and thought it was 2 shots I am going to hit my whistle as soon as a player, some player, for the love of God! Any player has possession of the ball and give that team the ball OOB at the nearest spot. Now if just ONE player has the frame of mind to make a play on the ball then I will withold the whistle.
