lately its all happened when I'm PMS-ing....

Let's start with a (baseball) tournament I worked about a month ago. (11u boys, travelling teams) typical whiney crowd that reacted to every call, got particularly upset at a play at the plate.... I won't go into the details as my point is I thought lava was going to start flowing from every pore in their bodies. they continued to spastically blurt whatever stupid comment they could come up with, & after two pitches to the next batter I heard someone drop the F* bomb. My partner had tossed their coach an inning prior, & now I turned around to the backstop & said "ok, we WILL do without the profanity". this incited more arguing from them. one angry mother even came into the dugout, picked up a bat & shook it towards me as she started walking towards the field-exit to the dugout, screaming at me "F*** YOU, YOU F***ING B**CH!!" I called the game & my partner & I got the HECK outta there.

Then the next day, a basketball tourny of local teams. From the coach that was down by 20+, I was told I was scared.... so I gave that coach a reason to leave the gym... his assistant was coaching the younger age bracket of their team in the next game, & with 3 min left (& down by 20+), as he stood at the scorer's table, he told me to get my head out of my a$$. After calmly telling him he's ejected, I softly added "That's the safest place I've found for it, nobody messes with my a$$...". :D

Would you be less angry if I told you that you did a good job in both cases?:D

The only possible thing that I personally might have done differently was in the beisbol game. I don't believe in talking to fans. I would have stopped the game and let whoever game management might be deal with the fans. That's their job after you've identified the problem. If you can't find anyone from game management, suspend the game until they crawl out of wherever they're hiding.

Other than that, big ups imo for taking care of bidness. It helps all of your fellow officials down the road when you refuse to take crap like you detailed. If more officials would follow your lead, I'm firmly convinced we'd have fewer coach/fan problems.

Continuing Off Topic......

We had an "interesting event" at our baseball game last night. I'm Asst coach, B13-15.

We're home, winning 13-8 at the end of four innings and we're at the infamous "two hour" mark of the game (meaning no inning can be started, etc.) Both teams are cordially lining up to shake hands.

Senior ump comes in off the field and says "let's go we can get another inning in." Both coaches go huh? He says, yep, we have 30 seconds left before the two hour limit so we can start another inning. You're kidding right? 30 seconds? Did we all synchronize watches before the game? Uh, no! So, we played another half an inning....and still won by the same score.

One of our team parents comes up to me between innings and says, "we started at 5:30 and my watch said 7:32, what is he trying to pull?" I put my referee hat on for a second and calmly explained to her that her watch didn't matter - only the umps did. It was bizarre though.....

Grune....

Our baseball league fixed that rule this year because we had that same issue in the past.

When the 3rd out is recorded in the bottom of the inning, that is the start of the new inning. No more of the first pitch in the new inning is the start of that next inning. Too much delay, warmup pitches etc.....When the previous inning ends, that's when the ump checks the time.

Your league didn't need to do that -- it's the official rule.

Did he think he's paid by the hour?

Did you expect anything less? You're asking for it handling it in this fashion.

Don't talk to the fans; take it up with the TD and let them handle it.
