Traveling / Post moves

Several officials and coaches I know have different takes on traveling for low post moves.

The player pivots on right foot faces the defense pump fakes, rake through then steps through with the left foot, picks up right foot shoots the ball before the right foot touches the floor. Most I know do not call this traveling

But if the same player wiith right pivot foot steps up the lane then whips or reverses the pivot back down the lane with the left foot picks up the right foot shoots before the right hits the ground (tail whip)....Traveling.

What is the correct call?

The pivot foot may be lifted before shooting. If it returns to the floor, however, it's a travel.

It is that simple. With pivot moves in the paint, some may look different and may get called for that reason. Still the wrong call.

You watch the pivot foot. If the player with the ball raises his pivot foot, he has to get rid of the ball before his pivot foot hits the court again. If he/she doesn't, it''s traveling.

Don't worry about anything else and don't make it any more difficult than it is.

First, this guy gets a T for having a garden implement on the court. Then, he gets another T for whipping another player with his tail. How did the officials allow a player who has a tail anyway?

I even had a guy that use to coach in the WMBA tell me one was traveling the other was not.

I keep looking for video clips showing this but I can't find any.

WMBA? Is this a graduate school intramural program?

I don't know what the WMBA is, but regardless, I wouldn't ever trust a coach's view of what traveling is or isn't.

FWIW, this is why you should develop a confidence in the rules that does not depend on coaches you know. As officials, we need to be confident enough to correct them; even if discretion leads us to refrain.

Right :) it's generally "not a travel" when it's against their team & most definately "an obvious travel" when it's against their opponent.

It's where Mark Cuban learnt about basketball.

If the guy used to coach in this league, I'm not surprised he didn't know the travel rule. Apparently, no one in the league knows the uniform rule, either.
