Local officials association awards

I am invovled in a 125 member association. Currently the only award we present is Member of the Year. This award is based on overall contribution to the group. It has nothing to do with on court performance.

Some of the feedback I got at our Spring Meeting is the membership would like to see more recognition of the membership. The feeling is one award spread over 125 members is not enough.

So what are some of the awards handed out by your associations. More importantly what process and criteria is used to select the award winners?

Awards ...

My local IAABO board presents membership pins, beginning at five years, and for every five years thereafter, thus, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.

Outgoing president also receives an award.

Here is what our group gives out:

Member of the year (official who contributes to our group on and off the floor)
Apprentice of the Year (basically the newcomer of the year)
Lifetime Achievement (for many, many years of excellent service)
Inspirational Official (an official who inspires the rest of us to excel)
Assignor's Award (official who bailed our assignor out through the year)
Host School of the Year (School that treated our officials great at their site)
Player of the Year (excellent student-athlete who treats officials with respect)
Coach of the Year (Coach who treats our officials with respect while getting a lot out of his players)

The last 3 awards are voted on by members of our association.
The first 4 awards are chosen by the board. We have documented criteria for each award that is followed by the board.
The assignor's award is chosen by our assignor.

We also give out service pins for each 5 years of service starting at 10 years.

I guess it depends on what association I am talking about. One of the associations I belong to has a banquet where they give out awards to people helpful to officiating and induct hall of fame entries every year. But there are not any awards for things like "Rookie of the Year" or "Official of the Year" kind of awards. We do recognize officials that go extensively in the post season but we do not give them anything special unless they have worked the State Finals.

Peace

Some of those are really neat ideas. I think I will forward this thread to our board.

My high school association gives an award for outstanding achievement on the court. A separate award is given for outstanding service to the association. We also give a sportsmanship award to one school in the area we service. And we give $1000 scholarship awards to two seniors.

An association to which I used to belong gives out an annual "Mr. T." award. It's kind of a joke, but I won it three years in a row, so they named it after me. :)

A few years ago, my local kids rec league group presented me with a golden whistle. Actually, it was a toy whistle painted gold. Hey - they don't have a big budget. Seriously, it's really a nice little chatzke to hand out to someone.

Thanks. A lot of solid ideas.

We also give out full scholarship for camp awards (6-8) to officials who have demonstrated the desire and impetus to get better. They can use it for our camp or apply it to any camp they choose.
Also, we give a sportsmanship award to the school who's teams demonstrated it the best that year.

I like those...I think I will forward them to our executive board members for consideration as well. It kind of spreads the wealth!!!!
