Zelton Steed posted on the forum here for a little while, and helped me out while I was trying to get into the Big South. Glad to see him moving on.

I also met Zelton last year when he worked the Big Ten Tournament last year. I was fortunate to get a pass from him as a result of another poster here and was able to sit with officials and their families all weekend. It was a great time meeting that official. I am also glad to see him advance.

Peace

I was surprised to see Rutecki make the tournament because his only conference tournament assignment was a Patriot League quarter-final.

He works games in several (Big East, A10, MAAC, NEC, Patriot and Ivy) conferences. He obviously received consistantly good ratings from his assignors or he would not have been selected.

As a teenager, I once met Bob Cousy. He was at our local Bradlees department store making an appearence to drum up business for his Bob Cousy sneakers. I wore his Mr. Basketball sneakers until I upgraded to Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars.

It was a quarterfinal when he was rather inconsistent, but not as terrible as I've seen him perform before. It was one of the better games I saw him have this year, but I also saw him have one absolutely terrible game in terms of performance and game management.

In case you're wondering how I know this, I go to one of the schools in that PL quarter he worked, and was at every home game this year.

I've read Earl Strom's book. Does that count?

Who cares?

I watch basketball on TV. Does that make me qualified to rip the officiating?

To qualify, you really should have to be in either your first year of officiating or live in California, but being a student in the stands works just as well too, Rich.:)

If it were, you'd have an awfully sore head!! :p

Gotta love these guys who come on here to tell us how bad the officials are who were chosen to work the biggest college tournamnet in the nation...what a bunch of losers.

Andy, I'm sure someone has a website with a consolidated list but I just used the good old-fashioned keyboard along with my cutting & pasting skills while perusing the box scores on ESPN.com. :)

BTW, my friend I was telling you about a while back, his son played RB for Phoenix Community College. Was National JuCo player-of-the-week for one of his games.

Apparently someone forgot consult UConn and Seton Hall's coaches because that incompetent Rutecki dude officiated the NIT championship game last night.

If I were Wally Rutecki, I'd feel pretty good because his assignment to the championship game of the NIT is a clear statement that his boss is behind him 100%.

If you look at the list of officials assigned to the final four of the NIT, they are all on the roster of the Big East. It looks to me like they were assigned by or with the input of Art Hyland of the Big East. If you look at the other eight officials, five worked the second weekend of the NCAA and two, (Burr and John Higgins), would have if they were eligible. Of the nine, Rutecki is the least experienced, so it would be surprising for him to be put on the championship game unless somebody wanted to send a message.

A couple of years ago Referee Magazine did a small Q & A with Art Hyland and it stated that he assigned the officials for the NIT. This was prior to the NCAA buying the NIT but it seems that Art is still the assignor for the tournament in the fact that the Big East officials were well represented.
