I didn't see the video but I can answer that question. Duke Crews, a key reserve, was out for a while with a heart condition. Worked many of his HS and AAU games.

And ironically, I ref'd him in a Boys & Girls club rec tourney at the end of his senior year before heading to Tennessee and I was roundly booed b/c I tee'd him up for doing a chin up and smacking the backboard on a tip slam--it was his 2nd "T" of the game. Apparently I was not supposed to enforced all the rules for this tournament but no one sent me the memo.

IMO, a dunk and then a two hand slap on the backboard like that in high schoo is a "T".

You call chin-up "T"s because the act is against the rules. Whether the player met the rules criteria needed to have a chin-up "T" though is strictly up to the judgment of the official. If you don't think it warrants a "T" under the rules, you don't call it. It's that simple. Some people watching the video think it should be a "T"; some don't. Hell, on this one I'd bet that you'd get different evaluators disagreeing on the call also, depending on their own personal judgment.

Whether calling the technical foul in this case actually "betters" the game though is irrelevant imo. In this case, if you don't call the "T", you do so because you didn't think that it was a "chin-up" in the first place. Personally, I put most "better the game" comments in the same hopper as "game interrupters". I think that both mantras are used by some officials (not you, Rich. I know better) as handy excuses to avoid calling righteous technical fouls.

Jmo.

It's a good question to ask, IMO, in the grey areas. One where one is unsure whether a technical is appropriate in a particular place. I'd never ask the question in order to avoid a technical.

I watched the video a number of times and it just didn't call out to me. And to me, it better be obvious in this situation. Even at the high school level. A love tap of the backboard on the way down may be a bit of showmanship, but is it necessarily unsporting? The two are not synonymous.

I have nothing on that play. At the very most, I'm going to the player and telling him to lay off the backboard slap on the next dunk. Seems clear to me that this wasn't a "chin up". I'm passing.

On this dunk-with the player slapping both sides of the backboard do you have a no call?

I likely would not have much of anything. I do not see the big uproar over every situation to call a T. If anything I would call the slap and even that would be unlikely.

Personally I think officials spend too much time to call things and do not know how to handle situations quietly. Just talk to the kid or the coach if it is close. I call Ts just like I call fouls, I want them to be obvious to most watching. This dunk was very borderline at best.

Peace

This would be a very weak technical foul at any level.
