Hanging on the Rim
Doing mostly MS/JV and Rec Ball, I don't really have to worry about this yet, but am curious......
As I watch the NCAA tourney I see a good many dunks and players "grasp the basket/rim" for what seems like an awful long time, some even pull themselves up, etc. Normally there is no call. I understand NFHS and the exception "to prevent injury" mentioned in the rule book and case book, but these situations are clearly not the case. Are NCAA rules different? Is this a call "you just don't see" too much? What is your criteria to decide a T for "grasping the basket/rim" in HS? How often do you call it? Ever call one and wish you hadn't? Call it and then T up a coach for arguing it? Just curious, thanks. |
Several of the ones I see on TV will draw a T in a HS game....at least in my game. If they use the rim to swing up/around, I call it....even if there is a person below them. They can hang on for safety but that doesn't give them permission to put on a gymnastics demonstration....that is still illegal.
As for what you see on TV, the standard is different. If I were calling those games, I'll let the same plays go. It's a matter of interpretation....how much is too much. |
See Syracuse vs Vermont.
