I see the officials did not stay for the post game handshake.

MikeK27 Tue Mar 11, 2008 07:51am

Now that was a finish.

As I watched the beginning of that video after she made the 3pt shot I immediately thought "WHY THE HECK IS THAT TEAM COMING ON THE COURT LIKE THAT"?

Oh well.... They did it to themselves..

I thought exactly the same thing. At first I thought - are the officials going to look the other way? And then more players came out and were still celebrating, and I thought - they can't ignore that!

They didn't. :D

We had something very similar happen in the Boys 3A final here in Iowa Saturday night.

Harlan down by 4 with about 10 secs left makes a lay up to pull with in 2. Dubuque Wahlert tries to inbound the ball and is it deflected right to a Harlan player and he scores another layup to tie it up. DW coach calls for time out but the in the process the time runs out. Officials get together and decide to put 2 secs on the clock. Harlan coach does not really put up a huge ***** about the the 2 secs being put back on the clock. DW inbounds the ball to half court and turns and hits a half court bomb to win the game.

It was a crazy ending to a game.

Here is a link to the video if anyone would like to see what happened.

looking at the crowd size, Illinois really has to rethink having State Finals downstate, at least for the larger classes 3A, 4A. Looks like girls basketball is alive and well in Oklahoma.

Brad,

did you just use the word amazing to describe a girls game?

Mark Padgett Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:27am

OK - ya' gotta admit the announcer is no Dick Enberg. 9.2 seconds left is described as "under 30 seconds". Really? Plus, the announcer should learn that teams cannot "call" timeout. I know, Mr. Nit-picky rides again.

vsivensports Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:41am

Hey Mark - Thanks for the help with my "announcing". No, I'm not Dick Enberg...don't try to be, but everything that I said in the package was accurate. The layup was made with 28 seconds to play to break the tie. Walters then missed a 3-point shot, Pocola got the rebound and dribbled down the court. Pocola turned the ball over and then Walters did the same so I left out 19 seconds of sloppy action because I only had 1:30 of TV time to use. Not for sure what you mean by "teams" cannot call timeout. What would have been accurate there ? Thanks for your help.

Adam Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:44am

Mark is on a Quixotic crusade to get people to realize only officials can "call" timeouts. Coaches and players "request" timeouts.

vsivensports Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:56am

Got it. I will let Dick Enberg know so he gets it right in the future as well. Back to the game, it was a great ending with 8 points scored in the last .7 of the game.

The entire day was amazing. There were 6 games played. The Class 3A boys final featured the state's all time scoring leader, Rotnei Clarke from Verdigris who is going to Arkansas next year. The Class 2A boys game featured the number two scoring leader in state history, Keiton Page from Pawnee who is going to Oklahoma State. Keiton had 54 points and 13 assist in Pawnee's win. He set state tournament scoring records for points in a tournament (138 in 3 games), career points in the state tournament (369 in 10 games) and most points in a championship game with 54. He had 53 last year in a semi-final game and didn't play in the 4th quarter. Rotnei Clarke had 60 last year in a first round win. Keiton also set state records for points in one season with 1287 (29 games) and scoring average for one season at 44.379.

The Class 3A Girls final had one team going for their 5th straight state title which would have been a state record for girls, but they got beat. The Class 2A Boys final had a team playing for their 4th straight state title which would have been a state record for boys, but they got beat by Keiton Page's team. In the Class 4A Boys game, McGuinness won their 3rd straight state championship. Their best player is 6'10" Daniel Orton who shattered a backboard earlier in the season with Billy Donovan in the crowd. McGuinness has now won 3 straight basketball state titles and 2 straight in football.

Sorry - I thought it was a paid announcer. Having previously been a radio play-by-play guy (back in the olden days), I get overly critical of those guys. Actually, you did a pretty good job for the type of description you were trying to achieve. For the timeout comment, you can just say "after a timeout" or "after a (insert name of team here) timeout". As to the timing, when you said the layup was made with under 30 seconds to go, the video showed the clock with 9.2 seconds. That's where my comment came from.

Hey - just ignore me. Everyone else does. :D

Yeah, but they're no Jon Deiblers!!!

Billy played against Jerome Lane, so he wasn't impressed. ;)

Glad to have you stop by ... Please be sure to come post whenever you have a rule question or anything related to officiating.

Some of us *ahem* get a little too tied up in wording in the rule book... The common terms used by coaches, fans, and commentators aren't always what the rule book says -- i.e. "charges" are actually "player control fouls", "over the backs" are "pushing" fouls, and, I suppose, that teams can't really "call" timeouts...

However, your job is to broadcast to the thousands of fans that understand "charge", "over the back", "call a timeout", etc. -- it's probably not unreasonable to use the terms that everyone is used to and understands .... However, that probably isn't going to stop Mark from being a nit-picker about it! :)

vsivensports Tue Mar 11, 2008 01:19pm

I'll take any help I can get. I have been in TV for 20 years and my dad was a high school referee in Oklahoma for 30 years, but you can always learn something new. I got home at 11:30 Saturday night and had to have a 30 minute high school sports show ready to air on TV by 8:30 the next morning involving 35 games that I had covered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so I probably did have a few mistakes.

If you want to see any of the other videos I was mention (state scoring records, shattered backboards, etc), you can see them on my youtube page at www.youtube.com/oksportsexpress

I guess these two teams didn't make it to the Finals playing Defense. Total choke by the white team but then they pull it off. Playing zone on that last play was risky

whistle during shot?

Just wondering... from the video it sounds like the whistle went off while the 3 point attempt was in the air. Editing issue or was there a whistle that stopped the clock? If there was a whistle what was it for and why did the clock stop?

Interesting end to a game.

Thanks.

The whistle was for the foul against the shooter. That's why the clock stopped.

Just on a personal note, I want to say that I really hope that you'll stick around and read and occasionally post. I think it's very cool to have a media guy among us. It will be interesting to get the impressions from yet another perspective. We have refs and coaches here now, and having a member of the media here could be very enlightening.

I was the alternate official for a televised game once and it was kind of cool to be next to the TV "timeout coordinator" or whatever his actual title was. He was also the guy who told the "truck" when the officials wanted to check a replay. It was kind of interesting.

So anyway, welcome to the forum. I hope you like it and stick around.
