Fun things you do with your officiating $$

Ok I'll start.

I took the family to Disney in Florida for a week. I saved all my checks for a few months.

My kids and wife spend alot if time without me during the season so they deserved it.

Dan_ref Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:26am

Hey wait...you guys get paid for this...?

Ditto. And summer camps -- usually $1500 - $2000 in camp costs.

Same thing, but mine also has a feature to blank the video while only having the audio present. :D

Raymond Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:50am

Every year by April 1st my credit cards are paid down to $0.00.

G/f and I are going to Orange County, CA and Las Vegas in May and the plane tickets were paid for by officiating money.

Any extra money helps with my annual allotment of 2 out-of-town camps (this year there is actually a big camp in town, but it will still cost me $400).

Dinners out, 40 inch flat screen, poker with the boys, cigars. The rest I spend foolishly.

Fun things to do with Ref Money

Help pay for my son's college costs.......hey, he thinks college is fun!

Seriously though, golf expenses and maybe a night out, but I mostly just roll it back in to my normal bills......I mean I'm not in it for the $, I'm in to exercise, wear cool clothes, and attract members of the opposite sex! :D (may they never meet my wife).

budjones05 Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:27am

All the money I make, it goes to a savings account for my unborn children's college fund. My wife gives me some allowance, but other than that, I'm broke!

Coltdoggs Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:28am

Seasons past it's paid for spring break vacation for the family...lot's of dinners out...Last weekend I had to pop for new tires on the car so the weekly money always comes in handy...

This year though we have been paying down credit cards...have two paid off and one left...It's a nice feeling...

BktBallRef Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:52am

Football this year, 52" Sharp Aquous LCD. :D

Basketball, into the money market account for a house we are presently remodeling.

This season volleyball and basketball earnings were set aside to pay for my daughter's sweet 16 party next month. Next year .. we're tiling the kitchen floor.

Well .. as it turns out it's going to be much larger than we initially thought. Here's the story .. and a warning about making (absolute) promises to your daughters.

First, my daughter has always been low maintenance with regard to birthday parties. The past couple of years all she has wanted is to have a BBQ at the park with (all) her friends. But, for her 16th she told us she wanted something a little more. So I agreed that she could have all my volleyball and basketball earnings (after my expenses) to use for her Sweet 16. As it turns out, we were short on volleyball officials this year. I worked a lot more than I thought I would work, both HS and JH. I wasn't expecting much from basketball (HS) considering this was my first year. But I even worked more basketball than I thought I would. I saved all the checks in a shoe box until the end of the HS basketball season. When all was said and done, there was over twice as much money in the pot as I thought there would be; and considering we counted it as a family, I couldn't lie about how much I really made. (Keep in mind that I probably made considerably less than most on this board).

So, daughter reminds me of my promise to her and sets off planning her party, inviting about twice as many kids as we were originally planning on having; along with a couple extra activities. I really have nothing to complain about .. it's paid for.

Getting to this conversation late, but I ended up purchasing a pitching machine. After two years of pitching lousy batting practice to my kids I decided to invest in something a bit more predictable. That plus a bucket of balls and other baseball-related items pretty much ate up my earnings.

I'm buying a .500 caliber pistol! Last fall while bow hunting for deer, I walked into a brown bear while she was nursing her cub. I've lived through some pretty wild adventures living up here in Alaska, but I can honestly say you haven't lived until you are 40 yards away from an 800 pound bear having a staring contest, and you're only holding a stick and a string!

A friend of mine here in CO is doing the very same thing for a similar reason. When he goes elk hunting, he doesn't want to have to defend himself against a bear with a bow and arrow.
