Murray --Tenn Tech strange play

With about 2 seconds left in the game Murray State was shopoting a FT and missed the first of two. On the second FT Murray tried to miss the shot, Tech violated the line and caused Murray to shoot again, this happened 4 times, they were going to make Murray make the shot. Is this legal, never seen this before?????

It's been discussed many times, and is (apparently) becoming more common. I seem to recall a FED interp that this becomes a "delay of game" T on the defense ("failing to let the ball become live" or whatever the specific wording is). That said, I haven't looked for the interp.

My guess is that there will be an interp, at least at the NCAA level, next year. Until there is one, I'd warn the defense and then penalize with a T.

My guess, if the NCAA interpreted it as legal this year, it won't be next

Bug, which specific refs did you speak to. Or was there a press conference?

Coach Billy Kennedy ask the referee about the play and the ref said there was no rule in the book to cover this type of play. This was very unusual and I had never seen this happen before.

You've never seen a coach supposedly quote an official before?

I saw him ask the ref a question and it looked like he was questioning the play. On the radio he was asked about it and that was his answer. It looked odd and I just woudered if anyone had any knowledge of the play. It appears you do not have anything to add???

Adam Wed Mar 05, 2008 02:43pm

The thing is, there really isn't a rule for it. The refs, as quoted by the coach, are correct.

The shooting team has an option, if they have the arrow and are willing to use it.

Why did it look odd? There was an entire thread devoted to this exact subject just 2 or 3 weeks ago. You should have said "Aha!!! I know what's happening here. I just read about it on the officiating forum ."

No, but once Bob told you there'd been some discussion, it might have been beneficial for you to do a search if you're that distraught about it.

How about a delay of game t? What would happen if the shooter violated when the player violated? go with the arrow?????

There's no rule you could use to back this up.

Yes, and he doesn't even have to shoot an airball. If they want to play this game (assuming the arrow is in their favor), all the shooter has to do is step into the lane after the defense has already done it.
