Visiting coach chews on Home player
 

Varisty boys tonight, I whistle a foul on the visiting team, push, we are in the bonus, shooter goes to the line and makes the first free throw, visiting coach looks up just before the ball is administered for the second free throw and says hey that's not the guy that got fouled, I say yes it is, I'm tableside. The player at the line says, yes I 'm the one that got fouled, gym gets real quiet, visiting coach says, "don't talk back to me you just play the game" I did not like the attack on the this fine player (I've know him for 17 years) any suggestions if this happens again? Felt like whacking him but didn't, don't know if that is worth a technical. Never seen that happen before. Any thoughts?

I step into the coach's face and tell him not to say anything to the opposition again. The coach (if he's of good character) should begin apologizing. If he shows no contrition, then he has a very short leash. IMO.

BEcause the player initiated the conversation between him and the coach, i probably go with MAdCityRef methodology, but I war em BOTH.

I don't let coaches address opponents unless it's to positively acknowledge a good play. The V coach is getting a talking to from me on this one, to not address the other team again. Next time is a T. And yes, I would go directly to a T in some cases, but not this one. I would also make sure to not have my personal feelings of knowing this fine player for 17 years get in the way.

A coach bit a player? Isn't that a flagrant T? :p

Seriously, though, I'm warning both the coach and the player in this situation. Each of them keeps their talk to their own team, and we're fine for the rest of the game.

Why warn the player -- the coach stated his opinion that the player at the line was not the one fouled, and the player disagreed. Doesnt sound like a situation thats going to escalate. this sounds like the coach is blowing this out of proportion. Didnt sound like the kid talked back to the coach. If the coach can throw his 2 cents about who got fouled, then said kid that the coach is complaining about can at least offer the fact that it was him who did get fouled.

You've known this HS player for 17 years? :confused:

What about when fan bites player? Is that where we get the term "rabid fan"? :p

17 years...Varsity Boys....does this make you his father or uncle?

Any thoughts? What would your course of action be if he wasn't a fine player?

In some states, if you divorce your wife, she still remains your sister after the divorce. But, then, I'm not a lawyer, and I don't even play one in a televison show.

He was born and raised in the town I teach and live in, had him in my class when he was in fourth grade, reffed his youth league games and now he's a senior, he's not a smart asz, all American boy who just loves to play basketball, he was actually telling me that he was the one that got fouled when the coach jumped on him. Thanks for the responses!

He's just another player. Too much "love and affection" in your post. What if the kid was a known jerk, would that make a whit of difference in your situation? If so, then you need to step back, IMO.
