I'm in trouble

Is anyone else in hot water with their wife/fiancee/girlfriend for working a game tonight..on *gasp* Valentines day?

While my fiancee is pretty accomodating with my schedule and rarely complains, she was very disappointed when I told her I had a game tonight.

bigdog5142 Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:13am

I don't work Thursday's...I'm a youth pastor and I have high school group on Thursday nights. However, my wife & I aren't really into the Valentine's/Sweetest Day thing. I get her something small...but we figure if we need a "special" day to tell each other what we mean to each other...well, we've got problems. We celebrate on our anniversary. ;) Interesting to hear about what guys/gals are going through that are officials, though!

grunewar Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:16am

I've been married 22 yrs......how much trouble could I get in?

PS - Yes, I have two games tonight......

ILRef80 Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:17am

We aren't really big on it either. But, we have always done something for it - and it would be nice to at least go out to dinner together. Oh well.

cmckenna Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:18am

It's why i'm doing a game tonight... :D

Are we working together tonight? If so, one of us had better start driving! :p

gazebra Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:21am

went out last night--good/close enough--I work on the birthday, anniversary--very fortunate to have been doing this before her so she understands (not to mention she isn't a big fan of basketball)--so yes, game tonight

Two out of three isn't bad. ;)

Terrapins Fan Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:31am

Training. That's what it's all about.

Yes, I am doing a double tonight. That's why I took her out to dinner last night. that's why I gave her the roses last night and the chocolates ( 2 boxes ) and the stuffed animal.

But I can beat Valentines day troubles. Our son was delivered on the 15th of February. I had a game on the 14th and met her after the game at the hospital. She delivered at 7:35 the next morning and I had a game that night too. She is the GREATEST.

I fixed it, sorry.

Don't tell her she grates on you:D

I have games also tonight. 135 mile from home. Plan to wake the wife when I get home with a VD supprise!

 They have drugs for that. Apparently STD are at an epidemic level in some parts of the country.

bgleason@neonin Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:51am

V-Day and B-Day 2/14 every year

It is my wife's birthday as well as Valentines Day. What I usually do is celebrate in the morning before we go to work and the kids to school. Chocolate cake for breakfast.
I also give her the option of coming with me to the game. She usually declines.

williebfree Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:04am

How romantic!!!

:p

I can't imagine a more seductive manuever than bringing my wife w/ to my games tonight. After she observes all the "love" for the big guy in stripes, she will find me totally irresistable.

Meet my wife... Morgan Fairchild... yah, that's the ticket.:D

That one really did make me laugh right out loud. Very funny.

18 years for me and I've been officiating for 15 of them. My birthday also falls during basketball season. My wife actually gets more upset about not being able to do a "real" birthday celebration than about Valentine's Day.

What a coincidence. I've had 18 years of happy marriage too.

I've been married for 43 years.

Bearfanmike20 Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:29am

I took games on my wifes BIRTHDAY!!

Needless to say.. I found a replacement when I realized what I did.

I've been married 22 years and I told my wife it seems like 22 minutes.........................all under water. Rimshot.

eyezen Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:36am

I've been married 4 years and been an official for 4 years. I have an off night tonight, only because that is the way it happened. But other times I have done whatever it takes to make sure things are right, because that makes her happy. Only you can know what it takes for your situation.

I've been fortunate enough to have a mentor that is one of those guys that is seemingly flying around the country every night. With that comes a lot a great advice, but one of the best and most true to heart has been to make sure we take care of momma (or papa as the case may be, not that there is anything wrong with that). When things are good at home, it can only help us be better officials away from it.

Back In The Saddle Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:42am

Big romantic night planned tonight. Didn't take any games. Cuz' it's a special night....

Pack night.

Who on earth schedules a cub scout meeting on Valentines Day? Oh well. My wife is a den leader; my son is in the wolf den. I'll be there. :)

Rich Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:59am

I actually chose to take tonight off. Have reservations at a semi-swanky steakhouse for me and my wife of 11 years. Blocked her birthday this year (May) too. She turns the big 4-0 and probably needs me around to remind her of it all day.

Of course I had/have varsity games Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday this week, so having one night off (nobody plays Wednesdays around here) is no big deal.

:D Good one!

My wife is very supporting of my officiating. So I always make myself unavailable to all my assignors on Feb 14. It is the least I can do to thank her for supporting my vagabond lifestyle between November and March.

WestfordRef Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:19pm

No problem

I'm not working a game tonight, but I am playing BB, as I do most Thursday nights when I can. No problem with my wife. We always say, Valentine's Day is for amateurs. Flowers? You really need to send them when it's least expected, or most needed. Several times a year I send flowers to her work, with an attached card with flowery (but earnest) sentiments, often in Spanish or French so she has to get it translated. She loves it, and the bonus is I'm golden for a few weeks (or until the next time I screw up). It really helps in the winter when I am often gone most weeknights.

Did you have to clear this with your other wife first?
:p

(sorry, couldn't resist...we now return you to your regularly scheduled distraction...)

Your wife chose very, very well, and it sounds like you did too!

IREFU2 Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:36pm

Nope, she totally understands.....I just get her a ton of stuff and she is happy!!!!

tjones1 Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:40pm

I've got no one to get in trouble with... also no game tonight - rats!!

Oh well...season is basically over. It's been another fast season.

chartrusepengui Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:59pm

I pickup up VG tonight - got lucky - wife's working 2-11 so this one doesn't put me on the list! :D

What's the deal with that? Why doesn't she get a thrill out of seeing me work?

Rob, I didn't know you were back on lockdown!

Me, I close-out every other Thursday b/c my kids are with me. I won't see my g/f until after my game tomorrow night. Gives me an extra 30 hours to get her something :)

kmw Thu Feb 14, 2008 01:29pm

Females view

I wasn't going to be having a game tonight but hubby was to be playing hockey in his adult league. Lots of jokes this week about him buying me rum and then leaving me to go play. As it turns out, Tuesday night game canx for snow, rescheduled for tonight. So no hockey for him :( but GV game tonight for me ! I couldn't do this without his support. We don't go all out for Valentines Day.

My husband always likes it when I work on Valentine's Day. He encourages it. We either do late evening dinner/drinks, or a nice romantic brunch the next morning.

lmeadski Thu Feb 14, 2008 02:31pm

Got a game tonight

But to make up for it I am giving my wife a sexual favor today...I'm leaving her alone! Happy Valentines Day, honey!

Terrapins Fan Fri Feb 15, 2008 07:54am

I ended up doing a double header. My wife got home after 5p, I left at 3:30 to work for 1 hour then go to my game, I had to pick my 10 yr old son up from a snow tubing trip at 10p. Man, I have got the life!

I'm with you JR, when people ask me about marriage, I tell them that my wife has been happily married for 40 years, and I have been happily married for 12 years -- and they ain't consecutive years. :D

BTW, we just do cards (one for public viewing, and one for "not" public viewing), for b/d/anniversary/valentine day. Neither one of us care all that much about the presents (we buy what we want when we want it), or going out to eat. She is the best thing that ever happened to me.
