Limit of team members?

Is there a limit of how many players can be on a varsity team?

You can only have the following numbers 0 1 2 3 4 5 00 10 11 12 13 14 15 20 21 22 23 24 25 30 31 32 33 34 35 40 41 42 43 44 45 50 51 52 53 54 55. A team cannot have 0 and 00 as numbers. So that means that you can have min of 5 players and a max of 36.

When you try and fit them all in the book, just use another page(s).

Hmmm never thought of it... I've seen as many as 14...

Naw, players can wear illegal numbers also. Just costs them a technical foul each. Iow, no real maximum.

And, depending on what the NFHS does with the results of their survey, perhaps only one for the whole team in coming years.

In 2000 or 2001, my grade school played another CYO team (the opponent's #3 team) that had either 16 or 18 on their roster.

am I wrong: I thought if a player wore an illegal number, it was a technical foul and the player had to then change to a legal number. Am I mistaken?

Yes. The "T" buys the player the right to play with the illegal number. It's the same as wearing an illegal shirt.

However, illegal UNDERSHIRTS may not be "bought in" with a T. They must be removed, or the player can't play.

Parent to coach: "How come my kid isn't playing as much as the other 35?"

After checking the NCAA book, I see I was mixing up the penalty for a duplicate number with that for an illegal number. :D Kinda suprised that the rules allow a player to wear an illegal number after a whacking. Time to get myself a jersey with #½ on it. ;)

Check with your state association. They may have guidelines for regular season and rules for post season regarding rosters.

Not 100% certain, but I believe MSHSAA (Mo) limits roster sizes to 15 players for district play and beyond.

The WIAA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletics Association) has a regulation for play-off rosters, I believe they limit roster size to 15 players.

If you think about it, they're following the same philosophy for all illegal shirts, similar to the rule about home having to wear a white shirt as finally enacted this year. They ultimately want the kids to play but they have to have some kind of penalty for not following the rule. Not allowing players wearing illegal jerseys to participate in the game is kinda like handing out the death penalty for going 5 mph over the speed limit. If you have a team with all illegal shirts, you'd have to forfeit if they didn't allow them to play.
