Watching the '82 NCAA Championship Game

Wow, what a different game it was back then. No 3-point line, no shot clock. The game was called so differently - much "tighter" for lack of a better term (I'd even call some of them "touch" fouls, a term I hate), though not many fouls overall in the game.

Ewing had 5 goaltends in the first half - and at that point UNC had 10 of their 18 points from goaltending violations.

Hank Nichols was the referee - mechanics were very different, though I was surprised there were 3 officials. Anyone know when the NCAA went to 3-man?

Ewing, Worthy, Perkins, Jordan - wow were there some players on the court.

NCAA went to 3 man some time around '77. I don't know if all conferences did it at that point or it was just for tournament games, but I think you can do a search on NCAA finals scores and get the box of the officials.

Bobby Dibler, the current supervisor of officials for the MWC and the WAC, also worked that game. I saw it on ESPN classic a while ago, the game really has changed, but it was 25 years ago.

WHAT A GREAT GAME!!

Hank Nichols always had lousy mechanics. But coaches wanted him on their game.

BTW jdw, you forgot about Sleepy Floyd. Pretty good player in his own right.
