I'm Trail, player in front of me launches a 3, THEN I HEAR "Tweeet!". Ball goes in.

Partner has "no basket!! 3 second violation!!"

The whole thing caught me by surprise. He was waving off the shot, even before it went, but his whistle came after the shot was released.

Should I have caucused and advised what I saw (I didn't)??
The fact that he was waving off the shot made me yield.

What would we have if he is unaware of the shot?
.... count basket. Inadvertant whistle. go to a/p arrow?

this is tough. you dont want to throw your partner under the bus-- best thing you can do is blow your whistle, go up to your partner and alert him to the situation. OR you can swallow your whistle and walk awa.

If he was waving off the shot, then he felt the shot wasn't off before he blew his whistle.

Or he felt the shot wasn't off before the 3 seconds had elapsed. Could have been the right call, by rule.

The whistle and the violation don't happen simultaneously. It's when the violation occurs, not when the whistle blows.

Let your partner live with his call.

If you ever do have an accidental whistle, then use the POI. For a made goal, that would not be the AP arrow, but rather an end line throw-in for the nonscoring team.

Strictly this is what applies...
10.4 The ball does not become dead and the goal counts if made when:
• The ball is in flight on a shot for a field goal and:
▬ An official blows his whistle.
▬ The game clock signal sounds for the end of the period.
▬ The twenty-four second device signal sounds.
So the points should have counted.
How ever, if your partner know the ball was in the air but thought the shot was released before his whistle. Then it is a violation and we're going the other way
If you think your partner didn't know there were a shot, go tell him, the ball was released. If he says "I know, the violation was before the release" then we have 3 in the key and a throw-in for a violation.
If he says "oh I didn't know, then count the basket and inbound as usuall.
This conversation should be top 5 seconds, run there, tell him, let him decide. Do NOT think something about the violation, this is not about questioning his call, it is about making sure he knew the status of the ball.

Sounds good to me. I usually try to see if a shot is about to be taken right before I call one of my very rare three-second violations, but sometimes, depending on my position, my partners position, and my view of the player who's been in the lane a few seconds too long, I may not get a good look at the possible, or probable shooter.
