Basket Interference?

We had a no call last night in this situation:

A1 went up for a dunk and got the ball over the rim when he lost control of it. He then pulled down the rim on his way down and the ball passed through the hoop after he pulled the rim. "Muffed Dunk" I like to call it. Should there have been a basket interference call on this play?

Nope. Technical foul if no one was under him.

Are you sure? Does there have to be someone under him? Didn't that rule change many, many years ago? What if he's really out of control and needs to steady himself before falling to the floor?

I guess that you have to be there. I probably can't explain it in a Forum post, but I think that I'll know the difference between a player preventing an injury to himself, and a player showing off, or gaining an advantage.

10-3-4-exception: A player may grasp the basket to prevent injury.

Someone being under him is one possibility, but I wouldn't think it would be the only cause of possible injury, moreover it is not specified.

just another ref: Thanks for the reference. At one time, many years ago, didn't the rule state that there had to be a player under him. I think that's what confused Jurassic Referee.

Did the ball contact the rim before it returned parallel?

And / or was the player still holding the rim when the ball passed through the basket?

Back on topic...doesn't most all dunks fit that description?

On most dunks the ball is already passing through the basket when the ring is grasped, and it is allowed. In this scenario, if the dunk was "muffed" and the ball was above the ring, then the player grabbed the ring and was still holding it or it hadn't yet returned to its original position, it would be basket interference.
