Padgett, this little incident reminded me of a story you told recently.

Sub comes in, slaps hands with player who is leaving. Sub asks, "Are you on #24?" Leaving player replies, "No, I'm on zone!"

As long as he didn't say, "No, I'm on drugs!"

I reckon there was a reason the player was being replaced.
She was playing a different game.

Juuliemeister - you didn't specify in your post, and I thought Howard had you doing only 4A boys varsity, mostly PIL and Metro leagues.

Well, not to brag, but both Haskins and the Beaverton AD have complimented me to assignors other than Howard. Okay, let's face it, it's a brag. But on the other hand, I don't even have my R yet (insert whatever is the Fundamentalist equivalent of "knock on wood".)

PS I sneaked a peek into the eval box tonight, and Josh looked pretty darn good. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, eh?

I've attended about 6 or 7 of his games and so far, he's the only ref at those games who is reporting fouls correctly - color, number (properly, i.e: fourteen, not one four), type of foul with signal - and letting his partner know the consequence properly, also.

Plus - twice in one game he called that goofy over and back correctly. You know, the one where B1 hits the ball off dribbler A1 and it goes into A's backcourt where it is touched by A. There was one call against each team - he was trail both times and he had to explain it to both coaches....and his partner! (although only once)

The only thing I mentioned to him in the past 3 games was that on an inbound in the backcourt, he wasn't switching hands between the five second count and the subsequent ten second count. He was pausing, but not switching hands. He said, "Oh yeah, I forgot." The next game, he remembered.

If that's all I can find to nit-pick, I guess he must be getting good official evals, 'cause you know how nit-picky I am ;)

Speaking of that, how's your "push" mechanic? :)

Mark, what do you have against one four?

ChuckElias Thu Feb 14, 2002 09:40am

I'm with you, Bart. You can't put up 14 fingers, so you have to put up a "1" and then a "4". Might as well say it the same way. Otherwise, why bother with the fingers?

Chuck

If you say "one four" there is much more of a chance the scorer will charge the foul to #1 than him charging the foul to #4 if you say "fourteen". Besides, if you have a number in the 20s, 30s, 40, or 50s, and you report it saying "twenty-three", etc., you have greatly reduced the chance it will be charged to the wrong player.

I understand your point and i have heard good arguements both ways. Myself, i always get good eye contact and very clear when giving signals. i have never had a mistake such as this with the scorer, that i know of, knock on wood. I think this is a matter of preference. If it works for you, great.

Well, I have had problems with scorers, and for my money, Mark P's method is best at the lower levels. Then, when I do make it to Varsity, I'll decide what to do at that point.

Fourteen. Twenty-five. Hut!

Mark,
You are not alone...as you well know.

--"But, Mr. Clinician,... most guys say one, four."

--"But most guys are not here, are they?"
