What classification of foul? and pre-game Uniform rules.
Tournament game prior to my team playing. B1 is pressuring A1 as A1 dribbles up the court. As A1 is crossing half court, A1 slips and loses the ball. B1 picks up the ball and is about to start heading towards his basket for an uncontested layup when A1, laying on the ground, grabs B1 by the foot to foul and prevent the layup. Official calls a foul, team B inbound from the side.
After the game, as my team is warming up, I ask the officials why it was not called intentional foul as no play was made on the ball. The officials proceded to walk from me without answering, and about 2 minutes later, interupted our layup line to tell my players to tuck in their jerseys (shooting shirts still being worn on top of jersey, and a good 7 minutes before game time). Would you guys have called an intentional or just a common foul? Are there rules about jerseys being tucked in during warmups? |

2) No. |
Based on the way you described it, I'd say it was intentional. If there was any chance the person on the floor was just reaching up to swipe at the ball and hit the ball handler on the foot, then no. But if you're saying the player on the floor literally grabbed the foot of the other player only to prevent them from running away, I don't see how you couldn't call that intentional.

Sure as heck sounds like an intentional foul to me, but of course one would've had to have been there to comment for certain.
Seeing how uniforms are a POE this year & our jurisdiction is in effect when we arrive on the court, I like to have all players compliant while warming up. Have I gone as far as to have them tuck jerseys in the layup line (while wearing warm-ups)? Ummmmm NO because I'm looking for other things like pivot foot, jewelry, bobby pins, marked coaching boxes, etc. The uniform issue could have very well been the result of you questioning the officials judgement. Maybe Old School was doing his impression of James Brown & made up a rule to get you with the Big Payback :D |

Probably meant pivot cheek:D

Can you make a player on the bench remove an earring? Think about it. Don't be a plumber. |
Mark, I know you know what a pivot foot is so...

Ohh is THAT what he meant?
Yeah, I attempt to have knowledge of who has tendencies to travel well before the ball becomes live. |
Oh. I was trying to figure out what you meant by looking for the pivot foot during the warmups. ;)

Intentional foul. Non-basketball play.

1. Clearly an intentional foul. (But very unwise of you to inquire about something from the previous game proir to the start of yours. The officials may take it as you are already complaining.)
2. Some states have specifically instructed their officials to ensure that the team members have their shirts tucked in during warm-ups. I believe that North Carolina is one such state. |
