Violation

Ball in backcourt with much pressure. A1 picks up dribble and passes to A2 who jumps from frontcourt, while in the air A2 catches ball and lands in backcourt ... violation?

Yes.

When A2 was airborne, s/he retains the status of where they last were: that was the frontcourt. By landing in the backcourt, they have commited a violation.

"You are where you were until you get where you're going" I think is a phrase that applies here.

If A2 had jumped from OOB, instead of the frontcourt, and landed inbounds, instead of in the backcourt, would you call a violation?

Johnny Ringo Tue Dec 25, 2007 01:26pm

Does it depend on how you got OOB in the first place?

Could you rephrase this using proper English grammar, please? Thanks. :)

Sorry ... did not know we had English teachers in here ...

Does it depend on how you got OOB in the first place?

We go through stages of being snotty and nit-picky about grammar, vocab, etc and then we try to back off for a while, and then we get nit-picky again for a while.

However, I think Mark's question was because he really didn't understand what you were trying to say. It looks to me like your clarification was a necessary one.

No, it doesn't. And, the question was impossible to understand the way it was originally phrased.

Johnny Ringo Tue Dec 25, 2007 06:36pm

impossible to understand? Come on ... not that difficult to figure out. What all possibilities could there be?

Nevadaref are you going to educate us on this one?

A player coming from OOB? Would he be the sixth player resulting in a technical.

Was he OOB in because of a normal play off the ball? This would still be a violation if he was last in the FC.

Did he go out OOB on his own? This is a violation in its own.

Help me out here, I am running out of scenarios!

Johnny, your scenarios are irrelevant. Nevadaref's point is simply that if A1 was standing out of bounds, then jumped and caught a pass before landing inbounds, you would call an out of bounds violation.

This is exactly the same rationale as the backcourt situation. If the player is standing in the frontcourt, jumps and catches a pass from the backcourt before landing in the backcourt, you would call a backcourt violation.

The rules book (or case book) contains some statement to the effect that "noothher infraction or complication is included in the play unless specifically mentioned." That's generally applied here, as well. so, If Nevada askas about a player being OOB, you can assume the player is legally OOB, unless the facts indicate otherwise.

And, if he's legally OOB, then it doesn't matter why he's legally OOB -- momentum, he was the inbounder, etc. and, if he was illegally OOB, then the play "doesn't happen" -- enforce the penalty for being illegally OOB.

Look, you made a typo. I'm the king of the typos. It's not the end of the world. Just admit it and go on.

Johnny Ringo Tue Dec 25, 2007 08:23pm

Of course I made a typo ... I never said I did not. And the funny part about it is I am a sports writer, but I guess that is why I have editors.

I wrote: "Does it depend on all you got OOB in the first place?"

If you read it, I guess I would have assumed you or anyone else would have been able to figure out the word "all" could have been replaced with something that made sense - like "how" ... anyway, what about this word in your post: noothher

And another word: askas

I know, you said you make typos - so I will try to figure it out and move on ... I make them all the time, but now will have to give all my posts another read (or send to the copy desk ;) ).

as for Nevadaref's situation - will have to wait for him to clarify. I would like to know what he meant or what sort of play he was speaking of.

Does your editor catch sentences that end in prepositions, too? :D

HA HA, just joking. Notice the big smiley face. Don't get mad.

Johnny Ringo Tue Dec 25, 2007 09:20pm

Not mad at all ... while posting in forums like these, it is more like sending a text or it is very informal ... so not much thought into it ... basically, what is happening in our society with e-mails, blogging and text messages - we are seeing lazy writers. When was the last time you wrote more than three words in cursive writting?

Informal and unclear are two very different things. It may be obvious to you what you meant to say, but it wasn't to all of us.
