Wow!

I have to admit I was prepared to have some fan whining about a call.

I concur!

FrankHtown Thu Dec 20, 2007 01:38pm

Oh Jeez....I'm sure I've made some calls that make that referee look like Earl Strom.

I'll bet you haven't...........

Mark Padgett Thu Dec 20, 2007 01:41pm

Yeah - I wouldn't have called it because it wasn't blatant. :D

Not only that, those uniforms, more speficially those shorts were "blatantly" 1980ish.

Johnny Ringo Thu Dec 20, 2007 01:48pm

Seriuosly, I have watched it maybe six times just looking for something the offensive player may have done ... I got nothing!

FrankHtown Thu Dec 20, 2007 02:01pm

Maybe the offensive player was "giving him the business." :D

Why is that?

Andy Thu Dec 20, 2007 02:10pm

I'm still trying to figure out how the offensive player pushed off with the same arm he was shooting with......

The official's are wearing a collar as well. So this is obviously a very old tape. Also if you breathed on someone back then, a foul was acceptable. Those days are over.

Peace

Maybe in the B division.

And judging from the index to the right of the screen, I'd say there are a lot of other "worst calls" on youtube. I'm not gonna plow through them all and make a judgment.

I do think youtube can be fun for other purposes, though. Like entertainment.

These two get my kids laughing early in the morning, which is valuable, too.

Well at least he sold it. :D I don't think anyone was buying though. Sure don't see anything there. But we've all had whistles that we'd like to have back right?

As far as "if you breathed on someone back then, a foul was acceptable," that just isn't true. We have some old, old old-timers in our group and they have always been ardent supporters of not calling "touch fouls." Not calling meaningless contact is not a new philosophy.

Watch it again, it didn't even look like he was watching the drive.

I noticed that too and he may have incorrectly used a PC signal for a foul on 22 (or 23 can't see for sure) possibly. I think he pointed in the general direction of that area, that was where he was looking and 22 did have two hands on the back of the defender who was trying to box out.

I still disagree, but this might make a little more sense.

edited to change player number

Scooby Fri Dec 21, 2007 03:38pm

What I like is the reaction of the players. Not only the offense but the defense too.

Yeah - I had that Earl Strom autograph model that my mom accidentally threw out with my comic books. :(

In fact, I'd like to have back that comic, "Wonder Woman Makes Billy Packer Her Biatch". ;)

If you enjoyed the other clip ... these are worth a look as well.

Lebron James on a break away ...

And notice how many times the pivot foot is switched in this one!

The Dan Majerle video is excellent (in a sad, pathetic, wow the ref really missed the call, kinda way) - gotta be 9 or 10 steps there!

Andy, my guess is you are referring to the ref waiving with his off arm as he is holding up his fist and that is what is leading you to say the call was a push off. I thought so too at first. I've now come to believe that he is simply doing a lame "no basket" mechanic with one arm. I mean, if this ref can blow that call that badly, I have no reason to believe his mechnics are right. But then again, this is clearly old footage and perhaps that was the right way to signal no basket.

Boy, that call sucked.

By the way, have you guys ever actually checked the NBA rule for travelling? We just presume it is the same as ours. It isnt. Here it is, in part:

a. A player who receives the ball while standing still may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot.
b. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may use a two-count rhythm in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball.

A two count rhythm? He he he. I can just hear that explanation to a coach:

Coach: "Ref, that was a travel!"
Ref: "No, coach, he was in his two count rhythm."

"We" do? I certainly don't presume any such thing.

Mark Padgett Fri Dec 28, 2007 05:17pm

"NBA traveling"? I thought that was an oxymoron, like "Packer's correct". :D

(That's Billy, not Green Bay).

In fact, "Billy Packer" is an oxymoron without the oxy. :p

Ok, how about "I did." And my guess is just about everyone else does or did too until they looked it up and found it was different. Feel better now? :) I shouldnt have said "we" and I didnt mean to speak for you, obviously.

Man, sometimes this board descends into bickering and nitpickicking for no good reason. Luckily, these are great boards despite that characteristic.

How do you know he's not under the influence of oxy-cotin?

Chess Ref Sat Dec 29, 2007 09:32am

Now I'm not saying this is or isn't the worst call in history, but sometimes the tape isn't always right.

I got a fast break. I'm old Trail moving down court to become new lead. The ball handler and one defender. The ball handler does the lower the shoulder run into the defender ugly push off thing. I come up with a PC foul. right in front of ball handlers bench. So we got the coach yelling at kid about lowering the shoulder. ;)

My wife tapes me every now and then. That game was tape night. Later on I'm watching the tape and it truly looks like the ball handler just drops the ball. You could not see everything else. You can hear the coach yelling at the kid so I know I didn't imagine the whole thing though on that tape you would have thought I was making stuff up.

I'm just saying there are limitations to film.

Exactly...Frank nailed it!!! :D

I actually saw this called on Friday during a holiday tournament game I was watching. It was several games before mine and I just happened to be sitting at the scorer's table taking in all the action (it was on a college court, so the table had plenty of room).

angryZebra Mon Dec 31, 2007 12:01am

worst video

I don't think the video is that great. maybe the shooter got too far under the backboard and did that lateral movement and initiated contact with the defense. it doesnt look like he hit the defense that hard, and there's so many players in the way that what if he kicked his feet out funny and actually kicked the defense? at the angle we're watching it, its really hard to tell. if he barely hit the defense its a weak call, but probly not the worst call.

I don't think this is the worst call ever. its a bad & hard to see video.
