Christmas Time!!

So, the guy I have umpired baseball with for 3 years, and officiated basketball with for 2, and I are working our last basketball game together for a while on Thursday. We have done roughly 200 games over the last 2 years, and as a great Idea, and being it's Christmas time, We decided we should wear Santa Claus hats on thursday for our JV boys game! ROFL. any thoughts? :p

PSidbury Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:49am

There is nothing in life too serious.

That's right, all you scrooges... nothing.
Including officiating.

I say go for it.

(This thread ought to be a doozie...)

swkansasref33 Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:58am

haha, well, idk how serious he is about doin it. Id definitely do it... i think it would just be hilarious! so if we do, I will definitely post up some pics!

I worked with a partner last week that told me he has a brother that in IN. The association in the month of December works all games wearing a RED and White striped shirt instead of Black and White.

swkansasref33 Wed Dec 19, 2007 01:16am

tahts crazy... hopefully the assoc. pays for the red and white shirts?

JRutledge Wed Dec 19, 2007 01:17am

The issue is not what we think. It is what the people you work for think. I think it is an interesting idea, but I am not the one that is going to ding you for it one way or another. I would not personally do it because I think we should maintain some professionalism unless I was given and OK from an assignor or school. Ultimately this comes down to how it will be received and if there are ramifications as a result. I cannot make that decision for you.

Peace

Actually, I don't care what those people think and they know it because I've made that clear to them. :)

Thus wonderful freedom is enjoyed.

Scrapper1 Wed Dec 19, 2007 08:47am

Freedom is great, but I like my officiating schedule.

JoeTheRef Wed Dec 19, 2007 09:02am

Wreck ball yes. College or high school, shoot even middle school, a big NO. I'm with Scrap, I value my officiating schedule to much.

archangel Wed Dec 19, 2007 09:26am

I'd compromise and wear the hats onto the court, but take them off prior to game start. Running up and down the court w/ them would look somewhat foolish....is there a ruling against officials wearing something not regulation?

The FED lays out the basic uniform in rule 2-1-1. Most states/associations lay out an explicit dress code for their officials. Violations of those dress codes would be addressed by the individual state/association also.

Bearfanmike20 Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:45am

Pre game or all game... a santa hat will definatly make it difficult to do your job....

That all sounds great, but when you work for people and you want to continue to work for people, you do what they ask or you do not work. And I like the freedom of working where I want to instead of having to work for one or two people with no other options.

Also since this would likely fall under regulations with our state, if you get suspended for being out of uniform, then you might not be able to work any HS games at all.

Just like the freedom we have in this country, it comes with a cost.

Peace

I think that as long as they don't have logos, you're OK. :)

chartrusepengui Wed Dec 19, 2007 01:01pm

Bad idea - coaches/players are gonna expect PRESENTS! :D

BillyMac Wed Dec 19, 2007 06:44pm

Great Line

From Mark Padgett: "I think that as long as they don't have logos, you're OK"

Great line Mark Padgett.

If your assignor is anything like BillyMac's (see ahhh coaches thread) you may not get paid because you are in violation of the uniform code. Just something to consider.

swkansasref33 Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:42pm

haha bad news guys... no go on the hats... our game got canceled. the home team has a few guys goin outta town early, and injured player, and an ineligible. kinda sad.... wish i coulda done this last game with him. oh well. hes goin into the Local PD, and Im goin off to college. I took a baseball scholarship, so for now my officiating career has been put on hold. I think I was able to pick up six dates while we are still in pre-season, but other than that, my Fed ball is pretty much done with for the year :(
