Bad situation.

Hey guys just figured this might interest and maybe drive home the way to handle out of control fans. I got the following email this morning about a game here in Indiana this weekend.

In the new world we live in safety should be of concern. At a game saturday night in the crowd was a fan
from the visiting team. This individual was calling players names (cussing) and
other gestures at the officials. We as officials should NOT CONFRONT
these individuals. We should let game management deal with the
situation.
Game management called police, the officers gave a breath test and he
was
considered intoxicated. In the subsequent arrest the individual was
found
to have a LOADED GUN in his pocket. The officials did the right thing
in
telling management and letting them take care of the situation.

Treat every situation as a possible bad situation!!!! We just don't
know.

This came from a member of the officials association that the official that worked the game is a member of. Definetely makes you think a little about things.

Wow!

Drunk and bringing a loaded gun to a venue with youth. People like that should lose their right to bear arms.

Confronting Fans

I have had several partners "deal with " fans on their own. No bad stories but it always makes me cringe a little.

Luckily for me this board hammered home the point of letting management deal with the problems. Frosh tourney. One of the mommys is just loud and obnoxious but thats it. Annoying but not over the line. 2nd half starts and it becomes personal and racist towards me. I calmly talk to game management and problem solved. She went back to being loud and obnoxious. LOL

LOL! But how do you know she wouldn't have become abusive again later? Say in the parking lot or something? I'm not sure I'd let game management let her stay, once she was over the line once. I suppose it's a HTBT thing.

You're right I didn't know if she was going to become abusive again. I kinda thought of it like she got her first T. Next one she was done for the night.

I also haven't had alot of experience with crazy fans. I mean I have had my share of holler monkeys but only one went over the line. It was a JV tourney. Scorers table on opposite side of bleachers. Parent came all the way to the table to rip me . It was so over the line the cop and AD were about 5 feet behind him ,so it didn;t last long. He had to go.

Wait.. wait.. there are fans??... LOL

Honestly.. I still dont even hear the fans. maybe its cause I'm too new and too busy thinking of other things. Its like I have this switch...

Crowd off!!

and they are gone.

...as long as it's a right, and not a requirement (no one wants to see the gif)

Jerry,

Do you have a link to a news story? I like to get things like this on our football official's web site so guys know to be careful.

No I don't. This was an email from a member of that association that somehow got forwarded to me. Some officials in our area belong to multiple associations so it got forwarded on to other associations.

Is this the game?

No. This was in Eastern Indiana. New Castle I believe. Fan was from the visiting school.

Another situation where this has occurred is kinda scary. My wife questioned how they got the gun into the school for the game when I mentioned it to her. I was like, most places I go someone could easily take anything they wanted into a game. I have never been through a metal detector or any kind of search when enter a high school for a game. Kind of makes you think that that might be the next step and I'm surprised that there already aren't those precautions in some areas.
