How do you become a ref in Michigan?
 

I used to referee basketball in Tennessee and Pennsylvania. I've lived here for a few years and would like to ref here but I'm having trouble finding out on the mhsaa site how.

The easiest way to register with the MHSAA is on-line at:

After you fill out your registration materials and pay your fees you will be sent an open book rules test and another test regarding MHSAA policies and procedures ( If I remember, one of the questions was: What is the address of the MHSAA?) This was several years ago and I'm not sure if the testing portion has changed. They will then send you an id card and your patches.

I would also recommend finding the nearest association (they are also listed on that above page) and making contact with the person listed. They will be helpful in either putting you in touch with an assignor or getting you in the mix to get games. Association membership is also beneficial since you have to be a member in good standing of an association to have any post-season assignments.

Association membership is not a requirement in Michigan for post season assignments.

My apologies for the generalization. Per the MHSAA Officials Guidebook....

Basketball (Boys and Girls) - Officials for all tournament contests are selected from a list of officials who have an "Approved" rating classification, attended a current years rules meeting, be a member in good standing of an Approved Association and submitted a current officiating schedule.

New this year due to the season change...if working boys and girls games, an official must work six games of each gender to qualify for the MHSAA tournament in both sports.

History shows only the "Approved" rating is required.

I agree, but I believe the MHSAA is trying to get away from "history" by instituting these relatively new guidelines. Tournament consideration criteria seems to vary by zone. Members not in good standing from our association and non-members were selected only because of a shortage last year. I'm guessing that in the U.P. you guys have a tougher time filling spots. I'm also guessing that with the change in seasons and the resulting overlap of the girls tournament and the final week of boys this year that the regulations may be relaxed in order to cover games.

Indeed, I am sure they will be relaxed.;)

Yes they let us ref, but we send the sub-par officials to Ohio!

We just drive South until we smell it and then East until we step in it!

The more Michigan people driving to Ohio, the better. That raises the average I.Q. of both states.
