Ugly Broken Ankle

Kid in a boys JV game last night dislocated and broke and his ankle. He was trying to block a shot on a fastbreak, fouled the shooter, and the shooter landed on him...it was ugly. Ankles aren't designed to bend sideways at a 45 degree angle (and stay there). 26 minute delay while he was tended to...an ambulance was called and they carted him off. Made for a looooong night, especially with the girls JV foul/violation-fest that followed.

I think that was the worst injury in a basketball game I've worked...other than a cheerleader dropped on her head during pre-game warmups a few years ago.

Several years back I was working a game where a kid was all alone on a lay-up and he came down wrong. His ankle was pointed in another direction than where it was supposed to go. The game was delayed for about 40 minutes.

Peace

Here's one for you, about 10-15 years ago I was playing a pick-up game, went up on a fast break and came down on someone's ankel...felt the pop, all of that. When the ambulance came they took off my shoe and saw that my sock was soaked in blood..right to the hospital, compound fracture right? They get me there and are prepping me for surgery when the x-rays come back, no breaks...the only thing the doc could think of is that I rolled it so bad that it stretched my skin to the breaking point and it "popped" in three spots like a triangle on my ankle....that is where the blood was from...still have those three triangular scars...freaky...

Thats the funny part I'm NOT....built more like a tight-end than a wr...just my ankles are flexible I suppose:)

Six years ago playing Men's League softball, I slide into third base too late and the toe on my left foot hit the bag and my butt hit my ankle and popped it around. Broke both of the bones in the lower half of my leg. The buddy of mine that was coaching third base still has nightmares about it and the right fielder for the other team said he heard the break loud and clear.

The thing that gets me is that with all of the wonderful technology we have today the only thing the ambulance guys could do was tape a pillow around my ankle to take me to the hospital. It took five screws to fix everything down there.

Saw a kid at the "hyper" in college go up for a dunk and something snapped when he took off...he hit the floor like a load of firewood....he was holding his knee and screaming in pain...He somehow tore ligaments in his knee but the eerie sight was seeing his knee cap on the inside of his knee instead of the top where it should be...it was dislocated....Pretty nasty sound and sight...

I thought you were leading into the joke about the quarterback who thought he was marrying a tight end but wound up with a wide receiver. :D

Last year I fielded a call (I work 911 dispatch) to send an ambulance out to a JV Boys BB game; two kids diving for a loose ball cracked heads and both went unconscious. Blood and everything; I saw the tape of it later and even on tape, the sound of the collision was horrifying. Glad I wasn't at that game.......

I did a JV girls' game where one player went up for a shot, defender was beat and tried to reach over the back of the shooter to block the shot (I know, way stupid). The shooter's head went straight up into the defender's arm as it came down. Shooter hit the deck flat on her back. Left the gym on a backboard.

That's awesome! (Well, not for him.) Any chance there are pictures of that? I know the patella can get dislocated, but it's pretty hard to get it to go all the way into the bend of the knee.
