NCAA DII game Saturday night. About 45 minutes before game time we get a knock on the door from the Assistant AD. He says "We have a problem, The visiting coach says the basket on her end of the floor (shooting 1st half) is 3/8 of an inch to high in the front and she won't shoot at it" (for warmup or during the game).

What do you do?

I'll tell you what we did later.

You have to be kidding. She measured the basket!

Tim Roden Mon Feb 04, 2002 10:30am

A good shooter knows when the basket is off. This does give a distict homecourt advantage because the other team is used to the height. I do want to know what you did with the situation. Move the game to the auxillary gym?

Brian,

No, but you could stand at Mid court and see more space inside the basket on that end of the floor. When the maintenance crew came in and put the level on it she was exactly right.

Was maintenance able to fix it?

Ron,

What would you do if this happened at a high school game and there was nobody there to fix it?

HS and below, definitely play the game with a marginal difference like this if it absolutely cannot be fixed. But report it and the state should not let them play a second game like that.

If it's a boys game, find any old rim-hanger to make a manual adjustment :D

Brian Watson Mon Feb 04, 2002 12:51pm

they both have to use the same basket at some point in the game. If it was HS I would let it go, I would guess the ncaa has some guidlines on this?

Here are the visiting coaches options.

1) Shoot at the good rim both halves.

2) Fix the rim.

3) Have the home team forfeit the game.

We looked at the rim, thought we could shim it somehow, but ended up replacing it and starting the game 40 minutes late.
Everyone seemed satisfied with what we did.

It seems odd that the visitors could choose 3 with 1 and 2 available. If they chose 1, would they also get choice of bench, i.e., could they pick whether they want to coach the offense or defense for both halves?
