Faceguard

Called a tech for the first time last night for faceguarding....durng a throw in the kid did it once, other kid knocked his hand down, then the kid did it again so I banged him...not sure if I like this being a tech though, but I suppose it is non-contact and it doesn't really penalize the defense by calling a violation on them - what is the penalty, the offense gets a ball back that they already had. This was only an 8th grade game (albeit a very competitive one), so maybe a warning may have sufficed, but in that situation with things starting to get heated, I thought it was the right thing to do...

Good call. Probably something you won't see often.

First (and only) time I saw it, I warned the player immediately that it would be a T next time, but it was a 6th grade YMCA game. Didn't see it again.

I called it a couple of years ago, right after they instituted the T. JV boys tournament. The kid was reaching around from behind ( not polite in this case, eh, bob?) and blocking the vision of the person who was supposed to be receiving the ball. Coach objected to the call, but I said, "Do you want your players guarded like that?" I know, I know, too much talking, but it worked. Game went on and no one did it again.

"Coach - that's only legal in peek-a-boo, not basketball." ;)
