Jump ball following the tip
Had a weird sitch last night at a scrimmage. The initial tip to start the game was tipped directly in between two players who both immediately grab the ball. So we've got a jump ball immediately following the jump ball. After some chuckling we get together and talk. We decide that we re-jump the ball since there was never any control established. The question then turned to who the jumpers should be. I say that the original two who jumped to begin the game jump again, but a partner said he thought the two who tied up to create the jump ball should jump it. What say ye?

Your partner was right. 7-3-2.

Well, this is also the guy off of our football crew who drinks gatorade, so I can handle that. :)

We just covered this a little over a week ago. If anyone wants to see the whole case play written out, check this thread: http://forum.officiating.com/showthread.php?t=39698

I believe this is a historical anomoly. Transitioning from the era of the "true" jump ball to the AP, this is the only situation that the AP rule didn't completely cover. So in this case we revert to the "old rule" and jump it up between the players involved in the held ball.
I really have no idea why they didn't decide to just rejump with any two players, but I like it. It reminds me of a part of the game from when I was a kid. On the rare occassion when it happens, I usually tell the wide-eyed jumpers, "Welcome back to the 1970's. Anybody want to go back to those ugly short shorts too?" Never had anybody take me up on the shorts. :D |
Are you wearing a collared shirt? :D
