Shot or violation

Does the NBA have a different rule than NF on what constitutes a shot? I was just watching the Twolves game against the Kings. Gomes drove the lane and shot a runner layup. It was an airball, and he caught his own miss. The ref called a violation, not travelling though. He put both arms up then elbows to the belly a couple times.

A try is the same in the NBA, however, there is a specific NBA rule that catching one's own airball is a traveling violation. That is the difference.

I can't explain the ref's mechanics on the play you saw.

Sounds like an exaggerated "block" signal to me.

NBA refs make up their own signals, sounds like he was showing how he caught his own airball...definitely don't want to look to them (or most big time college officials) as mechanics models...
