Team control?
Is there any team control after the ball is at the player's disposal for a free throw but before he/she attempts the free throw? If I call a foul on a player on the same team as the player shooting the free throw, (before the free thrower relases the ball) is it a team control foul, common foul, or an intentional foul? (Since the clock is not running.)
I ask this because a point of emphasis is to clean up play along the free throw lane during free throw attempts. I may want to call a foul due to contact but I don't know how to administer the penalty. My instinct is to treat it as a common foul or award free throws if the offended team is in the bonus. Please help. (Fed Rules) |
See rules 6-1-2(c) and 4-12-1&2, plus case book play 6.7SitB.

I'll give it a try.
6-1-2 The ball becomes live when: .... c. On a free throw, it is at the disposal of the free thrower. 4-12-1 A player is in control of the ball when he/she is holding or dribbling a live ball inbounds..... 4-12-2 A team is in control of the ball when a player of the team is in control ... 4-12-6 Neither team control nor player control exists during a dead ball, throw-in, a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try or tap for goal. So I would say we have a team control foul, no shots and ball is awarded to the opponent on the end line, spot throw-in. And I was not completely correct, per the caseplay Jurassic provided. Thanks. |
6.7 SITUATION B: After A1 starts the free-throwing motion, A2 commits a foul by pushing B1 along the lane. RULING: If the foul occurred after the ball was in flight, the point counts if the throw was successful and no substitute throw is awarded if not successful. If A1 had not released the free-throw attempt before A2 fouled B1, the ball became dead when the team-control foul occurred and A1 is permitted an unhindered free throw. The foul by A2 results in the ball being awarded to Team B at the out-of-bounds spot nearest to where A2 fouled B1, unless the free-throw attempt by A1 is successful in which case B will throw-in from out of bounds anywhere along the end line where the free throw was scored. thanks
I overlooked the case and the rule reference. Thanks for the help.

Just remember the whether the clock is running does not mean anything with regard to whether the ball is live or not.
Lots of times the clock is running on a dead ball. Lots of times the clock is not running during a live ball. The key to whether contact is personal or technical is whether the ball is live, not whether the clock is running. |
