Loose Velcro straps on shoes

I had a girls varsity (HS) scrimmage the other night where one entire team wore identical lace-up shoes with a Velcro strap at the ankle. And virtually every player left that velcro strap unsecured. On several players the strap was actually dangling and laying on the floor (ie; during free throws). When we asked them to secure the straps they tried to comply. But in every case they alleged the straps no longer functioned. And they were right...after a few minutes they were unsecured again. We continued to play and didn't force the issue because it was a scrimmage. What would you guys have done...whether a scrimmage or a regulation game?

I still play a little pick up ball once in a while and my shoes have the velcro. You are right, the velcro comes loose all the time. I hate them and will never buy them again.

If they are presenting a danger (which it sounds like they were), I'd advise them to find a way to secure them or they couldn't play. Nothing a little athletic tape (or just cutting them off, if they really didn't work) couldn't solve.

Here's a case where we have no business interfering. The shoes had laces, so they weren't about to come flying off. How is this a safety issue? Unless the straps were sooooo long that they could trip other players, let it go. It may look silly. They may even sound silly flopping on the floor if the whole team has them, but we have no business getting involved in a team's choice of footwear. JMO.

If they're long enough to lay on the floor, it sounds like a potential safety hazard to me.

If they're long enough when undone to be dragging the floor, then they're long enough to trip on. That's a safety issue...

Oh well....I cast a vote for OOO.

I don't think we're on different pages here - if they are long straps that can trip people, get them taped up. If not, no worries.
