Kids rec league coaches rules test

We had our kids rec league draft for our girls league last night. As usual, I gave the coaches a rules test. We use NF rules. These were the 10 T/F questions. Not one of the approximately 50 coaches who were there got them all correct. One guy got 8 of them wrong!

1) ON AN INBOUND PLAY, IF THE INBOUNDER MOVES MORE THAN THREE FEET BACKWARDS BEFORE INBOUNDING, IT’S A TRAVEL VIOLATION

2) A PLAYER CANNOT BEGIN A LEGAL DRIBBLE BY PUSHING THE BALL TO THE FLOOR WITH BOTH HANDS

3) PLAYERS MAY PLAY WITH EARRINGS AS LONG AS THEY ARE COVERED TIGHTLY WITH MASKING TAPE

4) WHEN INBOUNDING IN THE FRONT COURT, IT IS A VIOLATION TO INBOUND THE BALL TO A PLAYER IN THE BACK COURT

5) IF A PLAYER DIVES FOR A LOOSE BALL, GRABS THE BALL AND THEIR MOMENTUM CAUSES THEM TO SLIDE, IT IS A TRAVELING VIOLATION

6) IF AN INBOUNDER IS HOLDING THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS AND A DEFENDER REACHES ACROSS THE LINE AND PUTS BOTH HANDS ON THE BALL, IT IS A HELD BALL

7) IF A PLAYER SHOOTS AN AIR BALL, THAT PLAYER CANNOT BE THE FIRST TO TOUCH THE BALL BEFORE IT COMES DOWN AND HITS THE FLOOR

8) IF A PLAYER IS HOLDING THE BALL AND A DEFENDER HITS THE BALL HANDLER'S HAND CAUSING THE BALL TO BECOME LOOSE, IT IS A PERSONAL FOUL

9) IF A PLAYER REACHES OVER ANOTHER PLAYER’S BACK TO GRAB THE BALL WITHOUT MAKING CONTACT, IT IS A PERSONAL FOUL

10) IF A PLAYER IS DRIBBLING AND BOUNCES THE BALL OFF THEIR FOOT, THEY CANNOT RUN AND RECOVER THE LOOSE BALL

Great idea! I briefed all our rec league coaches on Thurs night. I'll have to try an exam next year! ;)

Of course they get them wrong! You are even mixing "reaching" and "over the back"! You devil! :D

You should also try question #1 with "one meter" instead of "three feet". ;)

Ciao

Did any of the other coaches suggest that he was really an official?:D

Mark:

Great questions. You gave the coaches enough rope to hang themselves. :D

The best part was when I told them we were going to grade the test. I first asked how many of them had at least 7 true answers, then 5-6, then 3-4, then 1-2. I finally asked if anyone scored all false. No one raised their hand. They were stunned when I told them they were all false. Nyork, nyork, nyork. :D

hmmm...I wasn't aware a player can inbound while either in the front cour or the back court. Somehow I was led to believe the inbounder has to be OOB.

C'mon, everyone knows you have to use duct tape.

Coltdoggs Mon Nov 05, 2007 11:27am

I'll have to use this tonight at my meeting....

Mark, your royalty check is in the mail....;)

buckrog64 Mon Nov 05, 2007 12:01pm

If some of the coaches want to whine about a 10 question test, just bring out the 50 question test the IowaGHSAU offers on-line or the NF test....

those questions were good because a lot of the stuff is more likely to happen during the game rather than some of the NF stuff they dream up for their tests....

Ok I'm trying to see the variations for FIBA with this response so anyone who is familiar with FIBA help me out if I am wrong.

1) F - 17.3.1
2) F - 24.1.1
3) F - 4.4.2
4) T - 30.1.2
5) T - 25.2.3 ???
6) F - 17.3.2
7) F - 14.3 & 24.2
8) T - 33.10 ???
9) F - 32.1.1 & 33.2
10) F - 24.1.2

The reference for #5 is correct: there is no provision for allowing the player to slide if he/she has already catched the ball.

The same for #8: there is no "hand-in-contact-with-the-ball" rule any more. The official has to judge whether an advantage is gained by the player who is responsible of the contact. It is almost obvious that making the ball loose by hitting the hand of the ball handler is an advantage.

Also #4 is correct, because in FIBA a spot throw-in is either in the front court or in the back court, depending on the spot, except when the throw-in is from the division line (starting of quarters, after T or U fouls, after a time out in the last two minutes). And, most important, there is team control during a throw-in.

Ciao

Incredibly, I ran into one of those coaches last night (no, not with my car) and he said he didn't believe all the questions were false. I asked him to tell me which ones he thought were true and he said he couldn't remember the numbers but he "was absolutely positive" at least three of them were true. I told him he was "absolutely wrong" and that if he came to the next officials meeting, I would be glad to have the entire group of officials go over the test with him.

He said he gets enough humiliation by coaching, and he didn't need any more. :D

Coltdoggs Tue Nov 06, 2007 07:33pm

As a follow up...I handed out my 10 questions last night...I gave them a couple of minutes to read through and answer...

I asked them first if anyone had more than 5 false answers, then 6 then 7, more than 7 and only one hand stayed up....That one hand was from a guy who has coached in our league for the past couple years and also is a fellow official...Most of them had 5 or 6 correct...

I was surprised by my group's results...we seem to have a good group of 12 this year (not from a rules standpoint) but everyone was echoing some of my sentiments about staying focused on their kids play during the game rather than the officials.....We'll see how long that lasts! ;)

Based on my experience and observation, I'd say about until the opening tip of the first game - if you're lucky.
