Our local fishwrap, The Oregonian, ran a story this weekend on violence in kid's sports. I was interested in the story because my son was quoted. He was asked why he stays being an official when there is so much crap given out by parents and coaches, and he said that he gets to stay close to the game and gets paid, too!

In the article, some "experts" were quoted and they really did have some good insights into why this happens, although it wasn't anything new to those of us involved in the profession.

Two terms that were new to me, however, were "frustrated jock syndrome" and "reverse dependency".

The first one sounds really scary. ;)

Mark, it sounds like the new sports buzzwords for the new millenium. I'm wondering if I can make a stress disability claim for FJS. Are there any shrinks out there that will treat my reverse dependency problem?

By the way, which day's Oregonian was that in? I am interested in reading the article.

It was this past Sunday, Jan. 27 on page 1 of the Living Today (section L). The article is on the right hand side of the page entitled "When parents and coaches need a timeout."
