Speaking of Dunks-GIRLS

I witnessed my first GIRLS dunk last night! She plays for Nimitz HS in Texas, she must have been 6'-3 or so, (I am 6'-0 and looking up to her), I think someone said she is a Soph, but not sure. Anywho, her team whens the initial jumpball and they proceed to score, other team brings the ball up, takes a shot, she blocks it, recovers the ball and fast breaks for the basket. With no one close to her she pulls up and double handed dunks... the crowd goes wild and the other team just looks at each other.... It was a neat moment. How often do you see girls dunk? will this be the only one for me this season??

Here's the Youtube link :

It says that she is a 6' 5" sophomore. This is a video shot during practice so we don't get to you in action. It seem that there are a lot more dunks in her future.

There's absolutely no way to tell. Just because her face is impassive and unexpressive doesn't mean she's miserable. And even if she's miserable at the time that video is shot, there's no way to tell why. Maybe it's that time of the month and she's having a headache, cramps and nausea. Maybe she got an F on her Japanese test, and she's worried how to get her grade up. Maybe she just found out that her much beloved grandmother fell and broke her hip.

And regarding "being a kid", do you suppose she's never had a chance to play with dolls and toy trucks in the back yard because she can dunk and someone she knows owns a video camera and a computer? I don't understand why you think that someone who gets a tape of themselves dunking and it's on Youtube is someone who can't ever "be a kid".

It does seem kinda eerie. She never even cracks a smile..teammates jumping around cheering...and nothing...blank.

Maybe she's just not an expressive kid. She's the only one that really knows whether she's happy or not anyway. Any other speculation is just that...speculation.

Unless she's a zombie.......

Looks like she's having fun to me. Very impressive.

Scrapper1 Wed Oct 31, 2007 09:00am

First of all, she did laugh at the very end of the video, as her teammate is checking her uniform. I don't know what she's checking for, but as the teammate pulls on her knee pad, the dunker laughs.

Second of all, it's very common for very tall kids (and she's VERY tall for a 14-year old girl) to feel "different", since their stature is such a visible difference from all their friends. It's not sadness or being miserable. It's just being so obviously different from other kids at an age when all they want to do is be the same.

Good point. And it's even harder on a girl to be very tall, even with lots of talent. At least it is at that age. Especially if she's interested in boys.

I'll refrain from joking about various short boy... er ....men who post on this board.

Me? I show restraint all the time!

JR? Restraint is his middle name!

Chuck? Ok, he might be a little short on restraint.

Dan? He's...uh...well...

She seemed perfectly happy during the scrimmage. She was at ease with her play and her team. She didnt showboat; just played the game and for the most part, played it cleanly. Perhaps you mistake her focus on the game to be unhappiness?? I didnt see it.

Ref Ump Welsch Wed Oct 31, 2007 10:32am

Amazing...she did the dunking as if it was second nature. And if it is true that she's just a sophomore, scary to think how she'll do when she's a senior. She looks like she played quite a bit of street ball, judging from her moves. Maybe those street ball games forced her to jump higher and higher?

Ya... I'm sure there was more to it.. I just saw the video.. was just going by that.

Juulie - just curious. How many toy trucks did you have as a kid? ;)

BTW - did you get my email?

Mark Padgett Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:13am

If she wasn't enjoying what she was doing, why did she continue to do it? She makes a whole bunch of dunks in this video, all in sequence.

Actually, I'm more impressed with the fact that she dribbled between her legs without looking. I remember watching Clyde Drexler who couldn't even dribble at all without looking at the ball.
