Beep Test

Has anyone run the FIBA beep test, or something similar.
I have done it and I have never been so tired before(87 laps )

For those of us "not in the know", what the heck is a beep test?

JugglingReferee Tue Oct 30, 2007 05:46am

The beep test is where you place pylons 20 metres apart and run between them. You must touch each pylon at the recorded beep. The beeps gets faster as you progress.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beep_test

It's used as a measure of endurance and fitness. More than FIBA uses it - many armies, police/fire services, etc....

Not to be overly "protective" or "critical", this Wikipedia article seems like it was a genuine description. However, in academic circles, this article could be taken as suspect. As a college professor, I can tell you that Wikipedia is loathed big time. Matter of fact, we are even supposed to deduct points for people using Wikipedia as a source.

As someone with a hearing loss and who has worked with others with a hearing loss, I'm thinking there has to be a light or something to accomodate for the beep. I'm not seeing anything in the article about that. Anyone know if this is the case? Thanks.

beep

I've used the beep test in PE classes that I teach before, it's a great test. Sorry Welsh there is no light. This Wikipedia article listed looks spot on.
I also coach CC and have used it with my runners. As you progress through the levels it moves past an endurance test to a speed test. I am in pretty good shape and can run for quite a while-but at the higher levels of this test you might have the endurance to keep jogging at a comfortable pace for miles on end-but if you don't have the foot speed to keep up this test will spit you out.

Why? I doubt its accuracy is any more suspect than many other web pages. In fact, I suspect it might be better than the average.

Because while it may be accurate, it's as likely to be wrong as anything. It's not authoritative, and it is updatable.

Now, it's perfect for something like this, but I can see how it would fall far short of the standard required for an academic paper.

Do the pylons beep in metric?

Look at the top of the page. It'll indicate whether the page needs updating or more information. Matter of fact, the page we're linked to has such a "disclaimer".

I've done the beep test. I reached 12.8 when I took the test about 5 hours after doing a 7-mile training run (I was preparing for a marathon). I'm guessing that if I tapered specifically to take the beep test that I could do better. However, I agree with oc that you have to have the foot speed to keep up after a while, even though you may have the endurance to keep running. So, perhaps I wouldn't do much better....

The beep test is kind of fun (if you like running tests); IMO, it's not nearly as tiring/hard as many speed workouts that runners do.

The Beep test that you linked, I don't think it is the same as the ''FIBA Beep Test''
I have't run this on the link but the FIBA test i have.
I can say that you have to run 86 laps to complete the test and it is 3 grades between lap 1 and 86.
So if you run 86 laps you have run like 1700 meters.
I have count :P so first speed is:
1: 20 meters for 8 sec
2: 20 meters for 7 sec
3: 20 meters for 6 sec
but it is not so simple as it sounds:P

Years ago, when the beep test was introduced, you also had to run 3 suicides within 5 minutes with a minute break in between. The suicides have now been deleted I believe due to legal reasons. Having done both, it is quite hard to do.

NZNBL beep test

NZ NBL referees still run the beep test and complete 3 suicides after the test.times are increased both for the time allowed to complete each suicide and also the rest time between. There are varying passing levels for ages/gender in the beep but not for the suicides.
