undershirt question

Hello all...I'm a new IHSA official and have a question regarding undershirts...I apologize for not having my first post be a little more interesting...I purchased a black sleeveless Reebok playdry undershirt and tried it on under my ref shirt, but the top of it shows in the front...I know undershirts shouldn't really show so I was wondering what you guys do...I couldn't find any v-neck sleeveless dri-fit kind of undershirts so do you all cut the collar off or make a v-neck on your own...or do you not wear undershirts? thanks for any tips!

If you're wearing a black undershirt for comfort, I don't see a problem. That's just my 2 cents.

This is what I wear

a little black showing is OK.

This is the kind I wear. They look great with my fishnets. Just ask Juulie.

Great?? They look great?!?! Wow, I'll certainly disagree with that! and that's not because I"m in a bad mood!

Brian = while an undershirt shouldn't show from under a dress shirt, it's not a problem to have a bit of black peeking out around your collar of a ref shirt. (The collar is black and it'll blend right in.)

Actually, one of the best D-I refs I know wears a grey undershirt for every game. Always throws me off when I see it.

I'm not a fan of the undershirts showing, so I get an Under Armour tactical V neck shirt. Also has a dark instead of white logo. I've got a few of them and a couple of more on order.

I know Honigs sells a McDavid V-Neck undershirt. Loose fit and compression. I wore it for a season and didn't like it. I use the underarmour short sleeve compression shirt or a nike compression shirt.

Always wondered what Padgett looks like.

Okay, so "always" is a bit strong, and "wondered" is an overstatement.

It's all personal preference. I wear the McDavid V-Neck and like it a lot.

I once wore an undershirt (slightly visible) for a scrimmage game and was informed to get rid of it by a sr ref. Best to avoid the conflict or criticism all together IMO.

Whether the undershirt shows or not really is more about the types of shirts you wear and the size. I personally buy v-neck undershirts and those for the most will not show. It is something that is hard to always do unless you buy both at the same time and try them on at the same time (which is very hard in the when most cannot be bought in a walk-in store).

Peace

I always wear a black u/s, and have never been told anything negative about wearing it.

Here's a picture of me and my brother. I really don't care which one you think I am.

I wear black sleeveless undershirts all the time. The small amount of black that is exposed blends in with the black trim on the collor and is almost impossible to see. No problems here.

I have a wonderful wife who is kind enough to convert my crew neck shirts into V-neck. Don't let the black show over the collar of your striped shirt. Just my $.02.

I am wondering if his zebra shirt is also long-sleeved.

FWIW, and without looking, I'm pretty sure both the NFHS Official's Manual ('05-'07) and the '07-'08 women's college manual state that an undershirt, if worn, should be all black and should not be visible.

I started with Underarmour compression undershirts, but I now wear the McDavid v-neck sleeveless (Honig's) all the time.

The FED Manual doesn't specify any color for an undershirt.

Yeah - all three sleeves. ;)

I think the only thing they don't want you to wear is a turtle neck. I wear the V-neck McDavid and I've also started wearing the ones from Wally World, which aren't too bad.

refnrev Sun Oct 21, 2007 09:14pm

I love the ones from wally world, but where'd you get a v-neck? Or is it a regular t-shirt material one?

As long as the moose doesn't show through the shirt, I guess that is okay.

I haven't seen those in v-neck, just crew. The ones I have that are v-neck are from McDavid.

Those inexpensive Athletic Works are good shirts. Used them for years.

Not supposed to see any undershirt. See mechanics book. However, since undershirts MUST be black, a small section at the lower part of the V neck has never been called to our attention. Just a question of professionalism to the nth degree. I just use a V neck cotton undershirt for HS games and my underarmor (crew neck) for rec ball and AAU/USSSA games.

Where may I find that in the Officials Manual?

You're making up your own rules again, without learning the ones that we already have. There are no restrictions on the color of undershirts.

mj Mon Oct 22, 2007 08:01pm

Where does it say you need to wear one at all?

Stand corrected 50%. Kansas state requires black. NFHS 1.5.1c.2. "should not be visible". I will focus to see if my "book learnin' " is Kansas or NFHS based. After so many years they blur.
