This occurred to me the other night and I was just thankful the game was a blowout at the time it happened. It is one of those rules that penalizes the offending team twice, by counting or not the FT then the two shots and the ball for the T. Defensive team player got his hand caught on the ring while ball was rolling on rim, had to be called. In NFHS the other rule that I know of that penalizes offending team twice is the jump ball rule when jumper A1 catches the jump ball. Team A is penalized for the violation, ball to team B and the AP is set to team B as well since team A had first possession even though it was a violation. These two examples are the rule (does the punishment fit the crime?) and the rulebook protects us if we administer it as so but I would have felt uneasy if we had called a T and BI in a close ball game at the end of the game. Can you think of other examples where the punishment does not fit the crime. I like the NCAA rules on these two situations much better. Can you imagine in a tie ball game, 10 seconds left BI on B1, count the FT, team A makes both FTs for T, gets possesion scores a three is fouled and makes FT, seven point play. Of course, this is a worst case scenario and would only happen to you in a State Final not a Sunday Church League. HAHA.
